The Philippines is assured of its first gold medal in the on going DOHA Asian Games. De Luna won over Yang 11-7 and Gabica won over Jeoung of Korea 11-5. De Luna will battle Gabica for the gold in the 9-ball competition tomorrow. The Philippines has such a deep bench that they hardly need their top guns in winning international tournaments.

IMHO, Jeff De Luna is the next big star to come out of the Philippines after Manalo and Orcullo. I was very much impressed with his break in the WPC. I saw him make 4 and 5 balls a number of times. He just needs more consistency and experience and he will be a force to reckon with. How I wish he could get a US visa next year so he can compete in US tournaments.

Im sorry, but I couldn't help but reply to this. There is only one 'bata' from the phillipines and we all know who that is. Thats like calling lebron james- Lebron "air" james (michael "air" jordan for all of you not in the know.) or Albert "mr. october" pujols. Please spare the comparisons and great nicknames until they have actually done something (for the record Pujols and Lebron are more deserving of a nickname like that than some guy from the phillipines called jeff 'bata' de luna.)

You are slapping yourself in the face with this. Before you start shooting off, you should do some research yourself. f210 was not the first to call Jeff, Bata. That is a nickname that is already with Jeff de Luna. If you had followed the recent WPC 2006, you would have realized that is what the media is calling him. Furthermore, if you had googled his name, you would have come up with an article at http://www.philippinepool.com/WebGen/aptsnews.htm where it explains that he is called "Bata" because of his age. I guess that unless you understand Tagalog, you would think that Bata only has a singular meaning in "magician".
 
I personally know Jeff and the "Bata" monicker goes way back...even before he was given TV exposure.

A lot of the people who watch his money matches saw a resemblance to a young Efren...very fearless & aggressive. That was where he was tagged "Bata" and it eventually stuck with him. At age 17 Jeff was beating people left & right. I used to watch his matches at Farmers Plaza and back then, he already had the monster break he still uses. He's a promising talent for Philippine pool. In fact, he just won the Silver medal for 9-ball pool in the Doha Asian games losing to fellow compatriot Antonio Gabica who bagged the Gold medal. And this was after a pretty strong showing at the WPC.
