Joe Porper Tuxedo Series Cue

Good Morning Everyone. I have a Porper Cue listed on Ebay, think I'm gonna pull the ad. I might have listed it for too low, asked for $3,000. Joe told us that the baseline was $3500. I don't what I was thinking. It's my boyfriend's cue and he's not too happy with me for lowering the price Joe suggested. It's really a nice cue, I'm saying Level 5 for sure. The Ivory inlays are unique. I counted the each inlay, totals more than a 100, now that's damn nice work. Joe says he thinks it's some of finest work -- not the finest but right up there. We know him from our local pool hall. Anyone here interested in the cue? I can send pics if you like, or you can check out Ebay. Also, anyone else think I underpriced it ?

Thanks,
Traci

Very nice cue, but unfortunately I think you are selling in the midst of a very depressed market for cues except for the very finest cuemakers (Schick, Ginacue, Hercek, Szamboti, etc.). Although a nice cue, I doubt that you would even have an offer at the $3000 price tag. The price quoted may be what the cuemaker deems its value, but not what the market will seem to hold at this time. I know that is not what you wanted to hear, but I think others will agree. Good luck with your sale.

Thanks Scott. No, I want to hear the reality of the situation, I appreciate the comment. I guess I'll leave it up then. :)

What's happening with the market?

It's a buyer's market!!!!!! So many great deals on cues, even some of the good deals take a while to sell.

Well, I don't want to deliver bad news in light of your expectations, but I had experience selling some of the Porper Tuxedo cues, although I didn't sell that particular cue. They are really nice, ivory joints, all quality elephant ivory except the ferrules and buttcap. The finish work is first class and they are a solid player.

Most were made about 5 to 8 years ago. Joe was asking about $3,000 for them with two shafts originally. The market went soft and I auctioned 5 or 6 on e-bay for him. The average at that time was in the $1800 to $2000 range with two shafts.

If you are serious about selling, if you get offers over about $1500 I would take them. $2,000 would be a nice price to fetch, minimum would be $1500.

Hope this info is welcome.

I agree with tate who knows the market well, they are nice cues but its a very tough market and pool season is over til sept.
Good Luck

Thanks so much. Joe told us to price it at $3500 -- guess that's what he'd sell them for. He only made three cues for this line. One a pro has, one we have, don't know what happened to the other. It's really a nice cue, shame you sold yours for so little. But, I'm reading here that the market sucks. Perhaps we should just keep it. I'll see what happens on Ebay. I have four people watching but that doesn't mean anything, sales mean something.

I was wondering something ... I'm about to sell two Stany Buyle carom cues, posted pics in this category. I was thinking of selling them and having Joe make me a cue, got a the desgin in mind.

What do you think of his work and his reputation as a maker? I wondering if it's a good investment. The Buyle cues are unique, probably a 3 on the ICMA scale, maybe even a 4. But, I don't know what Buyle cue's fetch so I'm mulling it over. Wondering if I should just keep those cues in my collection.

I agree with Tate also. If you could get between $1500 and $2000 you'd do well. Your Porper cue may be perfect, but it's not one of the sought after names in the cue world that will bring top dollar. Good luck with the sale...

Where do you guys play out of ? Ever go to Plush Pocket in North Hills ?

I actually learned to play there years ago back in the 1970's and hung around a lot when Joe owned it,. When Mark closed Billiard Connection, I went back to playing there but the smoke got to me. When they stopped smoking, I did play a the Plush for awhile but haven't been there for six months or so. I've played all the players there and I'm friends with Danny Petralba, Steve Chaplin, Nat, Mark Yamato, Rudy, Jim, etc.

Joe makes a fine cue when he's making cues, but he hasn't made them in a while now.

I know those guys, by the way. I love Rudy, it's so old school, so funny. Great character. I know Danny too. What do you think about the Buyle cues. Sell and get one from Joe? Keep them and wait. I know so little about Buyle, and he's not one for writing back either.

You know Luis Hallon. Little guy with big attitude and nice cue?

No, I don't think I know him. He's not the guy who they call "lucky" who always rides the money balls? The only player I know who has a Porper Tuxedo is Aaron and it's a very nice one.
