The popularity of Mr. Davis' blanks led me to try gain understanding as to why. After reading about the improved methods of Burton Spain and his protege/successor Joel Hercek, it was explained his work exemplifies their process. Is this correct ? Is there any other connection ?

John Davis has been involved in pool and cue building since the time of the greats. He has worked with them all, purchased a lot of their equipment and still makes a great blank today. John has been making blanks and cues since the 60's. That is a lot of experience that is going into your cue. Also, you know his work is top notch when there are cue makers out there that don't mind using his blanks for customers (aka cory barnhart, BCM, Ariel Carmelli, Paul Drexler to name a few).....that in itself says alot.

I recently went through the process with the help of martin at superior cues and ariel carmelli finished the blank. I may not be a professional pool player but that is the best hitting cue I have ever had in my hands. Martin picked out several blanks for me based on tone, density, etc as per his recommendation. He referred me to a few cuemakers and I chose Ariel. It was a great experience and I now have a cue that finished by one of the top cue makers in the country from a blank that was made from a man who was there when George, Burton and Gus were the big dogs in the game. In my eyes, it is a piece of cue history since the Davis and Carmelli have about 75 years f experience between the two.....

And John is one heck of a nice guy to boot.

My suggestion, call martin at superior cues (aka jazznpool) and ask him to check a few blanks that you like for tone and density. he will find a few jems in the bunch. That is what I did and I could not be happier.
