I remember John from when I lived in Souther California.

Not sure if Robinson was the first to inlay the joint, but there were a couple other things that made John's cues stick out. Foremost, he had the joint pin coming out of the shaft and screwing into the butt. Also, he had a process for dying Ivory that produced some very interesting and vibrant colors.

While I wouldn't put the joint pin in the shaft, I did get to shoot with a very high end Robinson. I must say it played like a one piece, very very solid and a terrific hit. His joint is very strong.
As a cuemaker I think the pin in the shaft might be the slightly stronger method. But it lost popularity years ago and as stubborn as I am, I am not gutsy enough to insist on going that much against the grain of the market.
Look at Burton Spain. He thought it was the stronger way and insisted on sticking to it. One of the first things Joel did after taking over was put the pin in the butt and Joel's cues sell better and for much more money than Burton's did.
John's cues play great and so did Burton's, so I solely look at it as a market demand issue.

I was always amazed at how consistently well those Robinson cues played.
