John Schmidt can jump

I was watching the ten ball ring game on Google and I noticed John jump a couple of balls with his playing cue. I've never seen anyone this good at it. He jumped a full ball from about six inches away and hit the object ball which was six inches past that.

Does anyone know what kind of tip he uses on his playing cue and what kind of cue/shaft it is?

If anyone has any tips on how to do this that would be great also.

Last I heard, he uses a Bobby Hunter cue with the original shaft I believe. I've no idea on the tip.

I’m not great at jumping balls but one tip I got from a Jimmy Rempe tape that helps me quite a bit is to look at the cue ball last on elevated butt shots.

It really works.

I can jump great with my Viking jump cue and with my stubby shaft jumper. I can even do a long distance jump with my full break cue with a white diamond tip but nothing that short with a leather tip.

I was told by a friend/cue repairman of his, he uses milk dud tips.

John was very gracious to let me try his cue once. It was a very nice hitting Bobby Hunter cue with a small tip and a long taper. I think the tip was a 12mm or something like that.

The tip just felt like a regular leather tip. Both shafts that I saw were regular original shafts.

A milk dud huh? Is that where you soak it in milk and then squeeze in a vice?
Yes. Elk Master. Cuemaker friend of his, Steve Bailey, told me.
Steve was also the one who hand tapered JS's BH shafts.

How clever to use milk casein which is a protein that is used to make plastics and adhesives to harden an Elk Master tip.

Is this the same John Schmidt that plays such good stright pool? The kid from California? If so he hung around BreakTime here in Wilmington NC for about a week a year or so ago and I enjoyed his company for bit.

That would be him. He is a fun guy to hang out with and talk to. He kept me laughing this yr at the DCC.

The same one. He left California b/c he had enough of me.
He was fun to watch while he was here.
He stole my stroke and I want it back.

LOL, you must've really ticked him off.... he moved all the way to the East coast! :D

Th first time I ever say Schmidt play was in Reno years ago. He was playing Salvas for some $$ and he had to jump a full ball at one point.

"What do you think? Is he going to make it?" I asked my friend, an excellent player who knows John a little bit.

He said "Oh yeah. Watch" and was nodding his head.

John jumped it, made it, and ran out. My friend just started laughing and said "Told you he plays real strong"

Johns' jump stroke was impressive. Dead straight accurate with a piston like action that makes you feel like he is going to put a good hit on the ball every time. He looked as solid as anyone I've seen jump balls.

Earl might still be the king of full cue jumps, though.
