Joint pins

I am about to order some joint pins. What are your thoughts on pins with the alignment barrel? I seem to have as much success and failers with pins with or without this option. How many of you guys prefer completley threaded pins or pins with alignment barrels?

P.S. By success and failers I mean getting runout or running dead straight.

I have been using the non centering barrels. So far i havent had a problem. If you are using a lathe, make sure the shaft is turning as pure as possible (you can use little pieces of paper to adjust it on the jaws). I take the appropriate tap and chuck it up in the tailstock, lock it down, do the first couple of threads by hand to get it started and you can either flick the lathe on for a quick second or do the rest by hand (by hand i mean turning the chuck yourself. this is the way i have been doing things)

I havent really used the self centering barrels, dont feel like i needed to however i have about 5 in stock so it is on my list to try them out.

To get them straight, i usually after epoxying twist them on a butt and let it dry that way so it centers itself automatically

I meant the butt joint pins, not the shaft inserts. But thanks for the reply.

I have used both types and I like the pins with the alignment barrel with a glue relief slot down the barrel. I have good results with the all thread pins also. I like to cut a glue relief slot down the part of the pin that goes into the cue. I like the glue relief slot because it allows me to get alot of glue down into the bottom of the hole then when you install the pin you get plenty of glue coverage without the risk of building up too much pressure and blowing out the side of the cue.

You will have much better luck in getting the joint screw in with a minimum of runout, if you drill & then bore your hole...JER

what jerry said. its not the pin... its the install. you need to center drill. step drill. and bore. also better be checking the cue for runout even before drilling. makle sure its chucked up as accuarate as possible use stub legnth bits that are stiffer.

chris hightower sells a mini boring bar for like 35$ buy 2. i cant put a value on this tool. i think i use it more then any cutting tool on my lathe

I've been using the non-barreled pins offered by Lee at Brianna. They are excellent, high quality pins & run as true as any I've ever used...barrel or no barrel. These pins run so true you'd swear the lathe is turned off. I really find no advantage from an alignment barrel if you bore the final id.
