Joint Protector Broke inside Shaft

I have a question on how to remove the pin side of a joint protector from a Schon Shaft.

The pin on the joint protector is much shorter than the pin on the butt, so i dont think that it is Bottomed out inside the shaft. And the pin is down inside the thread to where i cant get to it.

The surface of the crack is Flat. a real clean break! so i cant just stick something in there and easily just thread it back out.

I dont want to do any damage to the threading inside the shaft. Should i attempt to remove it, or should i bring it to a cue maker/repairmen ?

If it's only threaded in, and not stuck inside the shaft then the simplest thing I recommend is some super glue and a paper clip. Take a tiny amount of super glue, put it on the exposed (broken) pin, and glue one side of a paper clip to it. Let it set for a minute or two, and twist the pin out with the paper clip. I've used more exotic methods for studs broken flush in engine cylinder heads, but for a simple cue this should do the trick. If the paper clip is too thin to adhere via the glue, choose something thicker.

Steve, the absolute safest thing to do is to take it to a machine shop. they will remove and not hose up the threads. I had a similar experience once, but the male end was stuck. If you do use theh paper clip and superglue, be Very careful as a drop might even be too much. I would hate to here how you glued the insert from the jp to the inside of your shaft. Machinists are very precise and it will take them about 2 seconds to remove it.

Walmart or your local auto parts store will have a little kit with a drill bit and an ez out, that will take care of the problem IF you have a drill. Get the smallest size they have available. If not, take it to a cue maker/repairman, he'll prolly be a lot cheaper than a machinist. I also would not risk putting superglue that close to your threads.

Unless you have easy access to a cuemaker, the superglue would be the EZest way to take care of it. I think you'd have to be a total fool to be able to mess it up.

You are absolutely correct. I do think that superglue is too dangerous and I am recommending an ez out. with a joint protector pin, it's not going to be a snug fit, and you can use a much smaller drill bit and ez out than the pin size. You don't have to drill very far in, and it's much more controlled than placing a drop of a liquid and hoping that it doesn't run into the threads.

Hmmm, something I can control, or something I hope doesn't run off? Yep, I take control every time. Call me silly, but I'm a little more careful with things that cost more than $50. My cue is worth SIGNIFICANTLY more than that.
 
another option

Another option with the screwdriver is to heat it up and just melt a slot in the j/p let cool and VOILA unscrew it.

NEVER EVER EVER PUT SUPERGLUE INTO THE SHAFT HOLE. Plus a bent paper clip superglued to the top of the broken pin will NEVER EVER have the hold or the torque to bring the broken pin out.

The suggestions of heating the end of the screwdriver is the best one for a plastic joint protecter.

Alternately you can use a small drill bit to make a slot for your screwdriver. The thing is that you do NOT want to apply pressure to the stuck piece. You want to be able to make a slot and use a screwdriver to back it out without disturbing, destroying, or locking up the threads surrounding the pin.
