Hey guys, my names Nate n I'm new here. So I have an older Viking cue with 5/16x18 quick release threads. I have tried a few Meucci shafts with 5/16x18 non quick release threads and they fit great. So my question is I'm looking to buy a new LD shaft and does it have to be a quick release or will any shaft with 5/16x18 threads work. I'm asking this because I've been seeing a lot of nice used shafts that aren't quick release. Well I appreciate any knowledge u guys would be willing to share with me. Thanks

The Viking Quick Release joint is really just a 5/16-18 joint with the threads removed on the first half inch or so. It also has a larger minor diameter.

If you get a standard 5/16-18 jointed shaft it most likely won't fit down over the pin because of the larger minor diameter. All that is necessary is to bore out the inside hole to 17/64". Any competent cue smith could do that. This opens up the minor diameter of the insert to be slightly larger than the minor diameter of the Viking pin.

All the newer OB shafts with 5/16-18 or for the Viking joint will fit the Viking pin.

One more difference that you will need to watch for is the joint diameter. Most replacement shafts for 5/16-18 joints are .830" in diameter at the edge of the joint. The Viking joint is .840" at the joint, so it's slightly larger. All OB shafts made for the Viking joint will match the .840" diameter.

I hope that helps

Shoot well!
