Tap tap tap....

Would have liked to see him play in person back then...

Td

I played him in the late 80s. Not as fun as you would think :)

Oh, he was a perfect gentleman. Just a monster on the table.

I remember someone on here posted a thing about playing them, they broke and ran 3 racks against Parica, said he sat there quietly chewing on something not looking disturbed, then when he got a chance to shoot just took over the match.

Against me he had 3 9-ball breaks in a row to start the set. And I racked them it wasn't rack your own back then.

Talk about being mentally broken right away.

I remember thinking:"I'm playing the best 9-ball player in the world and I have to spot him 3 games."

As soon as I realized I was thinking that I knew I had no chance. Not that I ever did.

I learned a lot from the experience which helped me down the road. Part of it mental toughness. Part of watching how emotionless he was. Part of it was a couple of ways to play position that I didn't know before that match but use ALL THE TIME now.

Well you could have been racking badly also LOL

There are a lot of matches I have seen in the AccuStats tapes where the 9 ball goes into the corners or sits near one for a combo. Even Steve Mizerak when he was commentating got the rack wrong. One break where the 9 ball did not move he said "see, that means it was a loose rack". It's funny how just a few people working out a rack would change pretty much the way 9 ball is played now.

True. I always just tried to make it as tight as possible.

One of the most powerful strokes known to man...made it to #8 on the pro snooker tour.
.....he could shoot good pool also.

So he’s playing in a nine ball tournament on the West Coast....
...draws this little Pinoy first round.....the guy destroys him...
...Billy says to him “ When the matches are over for the night, you got the eight...
...if you want to bet some serious cash.”

What saved his ass was that Billy was partnered up with Ronnie Allen....
...Ronnie whispers in his ear “This guy can probably give YOU the seven.”
Billy walks back over to the guy....says...”On further perusal of the situation...
....I withdraw the offer, sir.”

And that’s how Billy Werbeniuk met Jose Parica

pt...Billy told me this story personally

Parica would have TORTURED that guy. Best $$$ player on the planet in those days.

Mr Parica

One off the greatest gamblers ever and a gentleman .Got to watch him in a couple of tournaments .Actually was playing him but mostly watched.I watched him give John Kucero the 7,8 in Vegas for 5000. Johns break meant nothing sitting in his seat. Jose liked to talk a little boxing also.Still in his prime like him over Dennis for the cash.

Wow! That is one awesome story! Thank you very much for sharing!

Great early photo of Jose!!

Even now you can learn a lot about his positional thinking by watching vid's of Jose shooting, because he often uses his hand to indicate where he wants to end up, or gaps he wants to squeeze through to get somewhere.

Another thing about his game is that even though he is only about 5-4, he didn't need the bridge much because he was very flexible, and could shoot opposite handed.

PT- I heard this story YEARS ago but not the name of the player himself, just Jose and Ronnie. And as Paul Harvey said, paraphrased, now I know the rest of the story! :grin-square:

Cool picture of Jose...he looked so young there. Enjoyed the gambling story as well. Hard to tell but judging by the joint design in the picture it appears to be a Meucci Original which a lot of players shot with back in the day.

Is there any video out there of a young Parica? The one I've seen is this match between Jose and Efren from 1988 with Japanese commentary:. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPHjfRpvk5g&t=846s (interestingly on a scratch on the break they awarded BIH behind the headstring and spotted the 1b. Also Efren misses at least two kicks I would never expect him to miss).

Yeah. That used to be the rule in 9b. It wasn't until Texas Express rules (I think) that made it BIH anywhere.

I'll one up you.
Jose in the famous SMB commercial.
https://youtu.be/rBjj0ZQUD7Y?t=101 He had one line. " YAAAAN" ( that's it ) .
He appeared in two of them. I can't find the one where he performed trick shot s and was challenged to a fight by Flash Elorde. Of course, they had beer instead.
