Joss Cue how old? What is it worth?

Amen to the good ol days...wish I would have been around then.

Here is the cue I had. I picked it up at the DCC at the executive under the impression it was indeed an old Joss, which after sending it to Dan he confirmed. It was a really cool old cue. When I had it for sale I showed it to a few dealers and one of them took out his jewelers head set and said "I cant give you much because you can see the glue lines in the veneers". A cue maker friend of mine was with me and promplty said you sure can, probably because the cue is almost 40 years old  Long story short the next dealer jumped on it. It was a 57 inch cue if my memory is correct and did have the 18 pin, and the thing was laser straight.
Niiiice cue!!!

A few observations:

It appears to have that single off-white veneer in the points that were early 70s Joss.

Looks like Brunswick KU bumper, probaly earlier than 1975, given that.

Hard to tell, but that first picture looks like it has an 18 thread pin. If so, earlier vintage. The OP would need to confirm, and provide better pictures.

The joint collar is not typical Joss, doesn't have the usual veneers, to go along with the boxes. Makes it very unusual. Definitely an early Joss, given the other aspects of the cue.

The wrap does not look original. Looks like it has been replaced somewhere along the line. Specs are quite dark to be original.

No shaft specs, so hard to put a value on it. But those who think 250 to 450 obviously have no knowledge. The butt alone, if straight, and good shape, would be more than that.

All the best,
WW

If someone offered me that cue for $250, it would cause damage to my wardrobe....
....’cause I would tear the pocket off my pants diving for the cash.

For 250, it would cause health damage as well. You'd likely crush a testicle going for the cash in the pocket.

All the best,
WW

Wing what's throwin me a curve are those big-ass joint-collar squares. This cue could possibly be one of the first bunch that Bill and Dan made.

You are correct. Thick white veneer is also a good sign of that.

That threw me off a bit too, as you can see by my earlier post. For history, the early Joss cues had predominately two types of joint collars. One, plain black. Two, small maple boxes inside the black collar, with no veneers. The veneers in the joint came a bit later. I will add though, when Tim Scruggs joined Joss, a few more joint collars were used, such as dashed, rather than the above. Not sure if Tim would have been there with this cue or not. This may be a one of a kind joint collar for Joss.

As Travis indicated also, the thick white veneer in the points was a Joss technique. I wouldn't be surprised with evidence of another maker using it, but I haven't seen it in other cues of that period. Today's veneers are quite thin compared to that thick white one that Joss used in the early days.

All the best,
WW

One shaft.

If straight and in good order...$750-$1,000.

To the right buyer....$1,200, on a good day.

As a player? Priceless.

IMHO such a cue is a bargain considering what other cues of similar vintage sell for from other makers that actually aren't any better.

Wide range I know, but the market is funny....such a cue on Ebay will be lucky to draw $750 with no proper inspection or specs.

An ivory joint, big pin, or inlays would draw more perhaps...but this is a basic Joss of the time.

Having it properly inspected and all specs provided would help the value.

Case? That's a Schmleke case, not an O'neil. They are still available brand new in a 2x1 for under $90, 2x2 for about $99 if you can find one. That's a 2x2. Case isn't worth a whole lot. Maybe 50-75?

'Bout time you showed up, Doc. Agree, not an O'Neil case. Those have a bigger hard handle, and finer cloth inside the case. This could be Schmelke or other hard cases of the era, with the flatter handle.

Pretty neat joint collars for that era Joss, no...?

All the best,

Just to clarify. I was referring to the case @ $250 if it was a Vintage O'Neil not the Cue and case. Correct Chop stand corrected. I jumped and did not note handle or latches. The old O'Neils were quite 'plush' on interior. I have owned several.

I do like those Old Joss Cues and they are worth $$ to right buyer.
