Joss vs McDermott

About to buy another cue and it's down to a Joss or McDermott. Never played with the Joss but I have a McDermott. I'm looking for information from those who have both (late models I guess since that's what I will be buying) and able, or willing, to give me a comparison.

Price is not an issue since I plan to stay pretty close in price on each cue. I'm really only interested in information on how they compare as far as feel and playablity, which I know if very subjective, but like to hear anyway. Also, any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Joss will play much stiffer and have a harder hit than the McD. I'm assuming the McD is wood/wood with that comment, since they a more popular type for Mcd.

Both have nice hits and play nice, depends on what you are use to. The Joss will probably have better resale value, if that matters to you.

How much are looking to spend? There are many options out there, check out the For Sale/Wanted section to see what's in your range. You may be able to get a nicer cue that way.

Resale is not an issue since I don't sell any of my cues. I'm not looking for a high-dollar, super-fancy cue, just one that feels good. I kind of like the McDermott with the frog--that's pretty cool. I believe the McDermott is 3/8 - 10 and the Joss is piloted 5/16 -14.

I like the hit of Joss cues more than I do McDermotts, I think because I prefer a stiffer hit. This type of thing is totally subjective, and really the best thing for you to do is test hit a few cues to see what works best for you. Find a friend or local at the poolhall who wouldn't mind letting you hit a rack with their Joss/McD. If you leave this type of decision up to others, you'll get a million different answers and none of them will satisfy you.

I you want a similar hit to a McD but a better "name" cue, try the BarCue from Samsara. Their prices went up quite a bit since they came out with them though.

Or you could just try a different shaft on your cue, it makes a world of difference.

Joss hit would be very different, you need to try them to find what you like.
 
the high end of either line...($300-$500+) is going to get you a very nice cue..

if you have $500 and are looking for a good player..just about any decent cuemaker... custom or production.. can set you up... after the $500 mark your buying the name, or the hype..

my player budget ranges from $300 to $500

pay less and you don't get decent equipment, pay more and you are buying hype, mystique, or decorations..


if you have 5 bills... you are going to get a good player no matter who you go with.. as long as you have heard of them.... you are probably good to go..

You can get one for $300 to $350..

The Joss cues now are just total garbage and made so cheaply.. My opinion of course..

If you like the 3/8-10 pin then switching to a steel jointed cue is going to be totally different, Obviously..

I used to play with a Schon and a Predator shaft for years.. I switched to a 3/8-11 thread pin and it took me two weeks roughly to adjust and actually like the hit..

From wood joint to steel joint is a major change in hit and feel..

Total garbage? Too funny. Schon = Joss + $300 extra expense. Dan and Stephen Janes are probably doing their best work they ever have these days. Cored cues, the exact same way that Black Boar builds their cues. I have yet to find a Joss that hits bad.

I've seen more warped Schons than I have Joss'.
 
I'd buy a joss over a mcdermott, and a schon over a joss. Just depends on how much I wanted to spend. In the 150-275 range I'd buy a joss. Probably a older one from the 80's or 90's. Just my preference. I've owned newer ones, and older ones. Just like the shafts on the older ones better.

Would buy a schon over either because I like how they play more. Personally think all three make a good cue.
 
I'm not sure why you have narrowed your choices to these two cues. I would HIGHLY recommend that you reconsider that decision.
 
My .02

Dan and Stephen build a very nice cue. As a matter of fact, the least expensive cue out there made by a cuemaker that has been in the business for more than 40 years. Credentials count in my book. Best cue for the money out there.

I wouls have to agree with Josh. I do not think that Joss cues are garbage now days, but if I had 300 or more to spend on a cue it would definitely be a Schon before a Joss or a Mcdermott. I own all three, and I woudl rank the Joss cues hit above the mcdermott for sure. Much stiffer and better for me personally.

I would not rule out a Predator sneaky pete if you like the 314 2 shafts. Best production cue for the money IMHO.

I prefer McDermott over Joss myself. Really need to play with them yourself, hit and feel is a matter of personal preference.

even with the cheap finish they put on them and the recent problems that most people have been having with their shafts?

i don't really care for mcd cues they play alright but i'd rather take a joss or a schon. what ever you get make sure you try it out first. i hear the joss cues come a little thick in the shaft and if you don'thave someone near by that can re taper it than you might be stuck with a shaft that's 13.25mm or something like that
