Jump/break cue as a playing cue?

Andy Gilbert makes the best playing jump/break cue. I would also recommend the Omen jump/breaks.

Why would you want to use a jump/break as a playing cue? I wouldn't want to for a couple of reasons. First off, most people will user a break cue that is either heavier or lighter than their playing cue, depending on preference. Also, the typical jump/break cue uses a very hard tip, sometimes not even made from leather. Further, often a jump/break tip is shaped flatter than the nickel/dime radius of a playing cue since most often you are not applying significant english on the shot.

It doesn't bother me for a few reasons. I play with a very hard tip and stiff heavy shaft anyway, my break cues are built to the exact same specs as my playing cue, and I shape both tips to a dime radius. A lot of times I don't take my player and case into bars or shady places. I just take my plane-jane break cue and play with that anyway. I'm not trying to impress anyone with my cues and cases. As a matter of fact, most of the time I try NOT to draw attention to myself. So for me, it's more a question of why not?

Very interesting. Why not find a well suited playing cue that breaks well for you? Yeah, you wouldn't have the jump cue option but I can't think of much that would bring more attention to yourself in a bar than breaking out a jump cue. I'm just thinking that to the extent a cue that is used for all purposes will have to be a compromise, I personally would rather compromise on the breaking part of things rather than the playing part.

Hmmm

Hi everyone. I've been thinking about buying a jump/break and using it as a playing cue for quite some time now. Of all the options I've considered, Andy Gilbert and Keith Josey are at the top of my list to make it at the moment. I also saw a Jacoby 'utility' cue (jump/break with a built in extension at the butt sleeve) and I like the idea, just not sure how those play.

Do any of you play with a jump/break or something similar like the above mentioned Jacoby? If so, who made it and who do you recommend I check out before making a final decision?

Thanks in advance everyone. Any input is much appreciated.

For cost ( no need to buy seperate break/jump cues and for utility (just gotta lug around one cue) it's not a bad idea. And a 1X1 case is also cheaper too !! Plus, when you go up against a better player you might have the mental edge. ( this guy is so good he's gonna play me with a break stick) I say go for it, there is NO rule that says otherwise.

Playing Cue as a Jump/Break Cue

You got it backwards.
You should search for a Playing Cue that works good as a JB cue.
Answer: If you can't break and jump with it then you should not be playing with it either.
