Jump/Break Cue questions

I have only been playing a few months and currently use a 1 piece house cue to break. I am interested in getting a break cue.
What are the advantages or disadvantages of getting a jump/break cue over buying just a jump cue and just a break cue other than cost and having to carry 2 cues around instead of one?
What break or jump/break cue would you recommend?

I currently play with a McDermott cue so I am thinking about getting a Sledgehammer but I see a lot of people on here have Predator Break Cues.

Any help would be appreciated.

I invented the Sledgehammer and I make a new break jump cue that you would love. It is the Gulyassy Break Jump Cue. It is guaranteed against warping. I have 2 new products that will improve your break. One is my new patented ferrule/tip that is virtually unbreakable, holds chalk better than any other phenolic on the market today and two is the new shaft coating I have just developed that will keep the shaft strait and smooth. Thanks for the information. I will check out the website and PM you to get some more information. Probably won't have the funds to get one before Christmas but would enjoy talking with you.

Just make sure and hit center ball with what ever you get until you get the feel of the cue down. Most have phenolic tips which hold very little chalk and any off center hit will cause a miss cue. I was in Bend Oregon about a year ago and went in a Billiard store looking for a Jump/Break. The owner was there and showed me on one of his tables how great it broke. He then told me to give it a try. I almost always put draw on the cue ball on the break. Thats exactly what I did except for that much draw will not take with my J/B and I flew the ball off the table and almost broke one of his glass display cases. Almost hit my wife who was sitting by the case. I ended up buying the cue and love it. I would like more info on the the new Sledgehammer as well.

J/B cues are nice they save money on getting separate cues and also save "case space"....
So they are great for traveling (can carry a smaller/lighter case) and for those lazy night or too crowded nights at the pool hall... when I don't feel like taking out three cues...
BUT it comes with a cost!
For break shot it is best to have a low deflection shaft but for jumping it is better to get a high deflection shaft. A J/B cue offers something in the middle... and usually more leaning toward a high deflection shaft...
the jump cue section of a J/B cue is usually heavier then most recommended jump cues. It is easier to jump and control the jump with a lighter cue.

My new patented ferrule material is like nothing ever used for the ferrule/tip. It will hold chalk better than any previous material, even mine. It is virtually unbreakable and is available right now. It is going on all the replacement ferrule/tips I get, and I get plenty. It goes on all my new cues. It is the best of the best of phenolic ferrule/tips, so good I offer a lifetime warranty and I pay the return shipping. On my old material warranty there is a $25.00 return shipping, insurance and handling fee.
 
Ok here is my 2 cents worth.......
I use a seperate jump cue and break cue. The reason being is I do not like breaking with phenolic. I feel like I can get more control of the cue ball with a leather tip break cue. This is especially important in 9 ball(my main game). Also for me it is easier to jump with phenolic. That is why I use 2 seperate cues. JMHO

I understand completely. I use phenolic to break because I do not generate as much speed as I would like. The leather is a buffer for speed and allows you to control your break with more accuracy. This is common for the bigger breakers. But most of the players are like me and need the extra mph to help making a ball on the break.

I'm usually skeptical of dual use equipment. I think you tend to sacrifice quality when you have a stick that is used for jumping and breaking. I use a Predator BK/2 that's made just for breaking and a lucasi jump cue. Both are terrific cues. I have a very strong break and a halfway decent jump shot. I shot with a McDermott jump/break cue in the past and I didn't particularly like the way it jumped or broke. IMO, having separate jump cues and break cues is the way to go. Having said that, my Predator BK/2 works very well as a jump cue when I play in a format where jump cues are not allowed.

Jump/break cues will save you money not only in cue costs, but also in the cost of your case. If you have a larger capacity case, you have room for an extra butt and shaft with 1 jump/break cue instead of a jumping cue and a breaking cue.

My Gulyassy Break Jump will out jump your Lucasi because of the ferrule material I have just patented. It hold chalk better than the Lucasi so I can jump closer with my break jump cue. If you ever experienced my cue you will feel the power and control my cue has over the competition. Now with my new shaft coating, my shafts stay straiter and feel slicker than any cue on the market today.
 
I had a Lucasi jump that I couldn't use for the life of me. I now have a Predator Air and Jacoby jump, and love them both. I probably love the Air a bit more. It's actually a three piece jump cue that accommodates both long and short jumps.

As for breaking, I wouldn't trade my Predator BK2 for anything. I even sold my Rick Howard because I never once used it after getting my BK2.

Most importantly, get what YOU are comfortable with. If you like the Sledgehammer, get that. If you prefer a jump/break, try some different ones out until you find what works best for you. When are you looking to buy? If it's possible, hold out and go to the Billiards Expo in Valley Forge in March and you'll be able to demo several kinds.

I don't know when I am going to get one but it will be Christmas at the earliest.
