Jump/Break cue reviews

Feel and balance with weight has a lot to do with how you may or may not like the cue. Feel can deal with Personally I don't like 3/8x11 or 3/8x10 hit where it is more stiffer with feedback most of the time. It is just too much feel for me. I generally like a skinnier butt, dont like thick shafts. My weight preference is around 18-19. Anyways with that said I will give reviews on the break cues I have tried. I have tried Andy Gilbert 18 ounce bacote jump break, 19.5 Predator BK1, Sledgehammer jump break with black wrap 19.1, J&J maple with quick release joint 19.5 and 19 ounce cues, X-Breaker with 5/16x14 18 ounce I think, Players quick release 18 ounce jump break cue.

Andy Gilbert Jump Break- When I first put it together it felt like it had great balance beautiful Bacote. When I first shot with it the taper was just weird to me. But it broke well as a breaker. I had better cue ball control then any other cue until the X breaker I recently got. Personally I think this is a better playing cue the a break cue unless you don't like the stiffer hitting cues. It is harder to jump with this cue with the standard ferrule and tip though.

Predator BK- Felt like it had a lot of power on my break when I had this about 2 years ago. The tip is not super hard so I could play with it as my regular player if my regular cue wasnt present. The cue felt heavier then it should have for 19.5 and I didn't like the balance too much.

Sledgehammer- It hits a ton but you have to hit it really good if you want to slam it. It has great balance with a radial pin giving an awesome hit. It is super easy to jump with it. Only thing I didnt like about it was the thick thick shaft. But with this cue you can half stroke it and the balls will still spread.

Players Jump/Break- feels like drift wood. I hate this joint, you can unscrew it with two twists which makes it very easy to get loose when you break. Overall this cue feels like you playing with a piece of crap cue.

J&J Jump break (phenotic tip with short ferrule)- I bought this cue because my friend lost his sledgehammer andd at 60 bucks it was an offer I cannot pass by. I tried it and immediately decided I would not use my Gilbert Jump Break cue. I proceeded to buy two more two days later from ChrisOnline for me and my friend. Overall It has a sledgehammer like hit but with better balance skinnier shaft. Again I can tap the cueball and balls will spread really well. Only real downfall is same the quick release joint again. It will just twist off easily after a few breaks. I have to make sure things are tight everytime.

X Breaker- Beautiful cue, Great balance, I thought it was 19 ounces but it feels like 18 and it may just be 18. I traded my Gilbert to try this cue after I was not going to use my Gilbert anymore due to J&J. I wanted to try one because of all the good feedback of the cue. First break the cue ball parked in the middle of the table. I think I hit it kinda bad. The shaft feels skinnier then any other breaker I have ever felt so I am scared I will break it :P. Overall this cue hits really really good with a good chalk holding tip. This is the kind of break cue you can break extremely soft on an off day while hitting it bad and still get great results. Mad props to Richard.

So top five:
1. XBreaker
2. J&J
3. Andy Gilbert
4. Sledgehammer
5. BK1

Hope my english was good enough to understand.
Gotta try a Stinger, Mace, Mezz, and Omen to complete my reviews :P. Laters

Are you serious?
You missed the best jump/break available...search Varney.

We'll see. A Varney BJ will be compared by an indepenent source very soon. If it is indeed the greatest one ever then that should be apparent when it is tested against an assortment of more well known BJ cues.

I'd love to know about this test. Who's supplying the Varney? You guys at Sterling/Fury. What are you going to do, use one thats several years old that you guys installed a fresh elkmaster on? Probably. I have no problems with testing a Varney...as long as it meets the same specs as a new one. Go ahead and claim the Fury is better...people who know, or own one know better. At least mine contain no plastic, the shafts aren't bleached/painted white and aren't made in China.

This thread was written to show what I felt about the different break cues I have tried. I have written this to compare different popular cues that many may use or claim to be the best. Few wanted some comparisons to which is good and why. So that is what this thread was meant to do. Everyone has their own opinion. But of all the break cues I have heard on this forum Xbreaker, Jerico Stinger, Andy Gilbert, Omen, and recently J&J's are the best. With that said 3 of those are in my top 5. I may or may not buy a break cue ever again. Should I have the chance I will try a Varney until then my Xbreaker is fine by me.

You are more than welcome to supply whichever cue you want for the test. Aren't all Varney cues the best?

Are you saying that you have cues out there that are inferior to the ones you make now?

Would you care to have a $1000 challenge?

You bring your best cue and I will bring five other unmodified break/jump cues from different makers. We'll do ten breaks with each one and write down the results on balls made and whether there is a makeable shot after the break. A neutral breaker will break with each one and the cues will be disguised so the breaker doesn't know the brand.

Then we'll do ten jump shots with the full cue and ten with the jump portion and write down the results.

If your cue beats all the other cues then you get the $1000 and the bragging rights. If not, then you admit that your cue is not "the best" and quit overhyping it. Oh, and you lose $1000. I'll tell you what, I will give you 2:1 odds. You can bet $500 against my $1000.

Can you confirm the rumor that you used to sell break jump cue made of inexpensive sneaky petes that you simply modified? Sneaky petes that were "made in China". Curious minds want to hear form the source whether this rumor is true or not.

Who said anything about the Fury Jump Break being better than yours? Not me. I just said that yours is not better than everyone else's. But, since you brought it up. Yeah, the Fury is better than yours. It performs as good or better than your cue does, costs less, looks better (at least I think so) and is 100% guaranteed.

"painted white"???? What kind of a 'cuemaker' are you that makes such a foolish statement like that. You know that the shafts are not painted any color. I think that what you know about cuemaking and the cue business could be described in one word, wannabe. Stop being a poser on this forum. You are nothing more than a no-nothing knock artist with no gamble. You are more than welcome to put up your import-hybrid cues against the cues I sell in a blind test any day all day. And if you want to prove your manhood on the pool table you are more than welcome to play me for any amount you can count and I will play with ANY 58" cue we sell right out of the bag.

And there you have it. Can I be any clearer?

Thank you so much for your kind compliment.

You have left out the Fury. The Fury is a good cue. Not only that, unlike some company which tries to feed customers with diplomatic word games, Fury has been very honest in stating their origin of manufacturing, with a price point which correctly reflects such. I have a lot of respect for their boldness, integrity, and honesty.

I have tried the Fury, and have even tried to run racks with it. In my opinion, it is indeed a well designed cue with a quality that cannot be matched in that price range. It is a cue with a lot of value.

I have also read a lot of positive reviews on the Varney J/B here on az. I have never tried one but am looking forward to it.

I am all for seeing good quality products with a honest marketing approach, it is the best thing that could ever happen to the customers.:)

Once again, thank you for the compliment. We will continue to improve ourselves, and do our best to offer our customers the best cue we can build.

Thank you.

Richard
