Jump Cues ☠️

I'm pretty agnostic on this one.

I wouldn't care if the powers that be decided to ban them from the game.

At the same time, I have and can use a jump cue just fine and kinda enjoy them and think they add some excitement to the game and it's definitely a skill being able to jump accurately and control the cue ball at the same time.

One thing I do like about pool is the various rule sets we play by. Now that has it's own problems too, but I've played in numerous no-jump-cue tournaments before and I like that we have that type of variety. People can run tournaments or leagues without them if that is what they and the players want. My league and most tournaments I play in do allow them and I think that is probably my overall preference but I don't mind the occasional no-jump-cue one either.

he put the short extension of the propel directly on the shaft. Would that be legal I’m guessing probably too short?

The 2021 UPA rulebook requires minimum cue length of 40 inches (Rule 9.7).

The Cuetec Propel is 47.5" and that includes shaft, handle, and extension. Without the extension it is 44". So, it is legal with or without the extension. You can see the 3.5" extension below the rings near the butt end of the red cue.

Yeah, but he's talking about not using the main part of the butt and screwing just the short extension into the shaft. That is too short to be legal.

Slightly off track but Karl did a review of the propel and the air rush. At the end he put the short extension of the propel directly on the shaft
Who is Karl? Is there a video of that? That would be a 32.5" jump stick. A Marty Carey is 40 inches.

Karl Boyes. There is a video. The configuration he tried isn’t legal or how the stick was supposed to be used. Have you seen a Propel?
Interesting.
Karl Boyes found that the Propel 29" shaft and its 3.5" handle (at butt end) made the best jump cue (although it doesn't meet the 40" requirement). Transcript of video at 9:50:
You put the little handle in the end [of shaft]. Fits lovely and, I tell you, the fact that it's a little bit thicker and the weight of the butt end, I'm not joking, that pops the cue ball insane. Really impressed with that. Maybe I've just found something out that Cuetec didn't know.
I think Cuetec designed the Propel to make longer jumps using the 3.5 inch handle and shorter jumps with the handle off. I am not aware of anyone else who found better jumping by removing the 15" butt and using just the shaft and the short handle.

Pretty sure it isn’t legal in most or all rule sets. Ones I have seen are 40”. Check the ones you play under.
40" minimum seems to be the standard. Still even touring players only spend a few hours per stop actually confined by the rules. 'Nother argument about cloth damage - the lighter, the less. If it works better for a player then who cares?

I come from an era where you learned how to kick or you got busted broke. As a result I kick well. I don’t particularly like jump cues for me as I don’t see the need of one.

I don’t really care about others having or using them, the complaint would be futile. I think it has led to players being less developed as they never learn kicking skills. I also think it hasn’t really affected me as most of my regular customers don’t really wield the $700 jump cues with any great skill, anymore than the $400-$500 CF shafts they purchased. I think it’s stupid but it’s cost me no skin off my nose, so Que Sera, Sera.

Never tried it , always kicked , growing up didn't even know such a thing as a safety . Playing safe almost seemed guilty and jumping dirty as I didn't understand how important at a higher level these tools are , so I am going to get a jump que and practice , get proficient . Better late to the party than not even if I'm 64 yrs old 👊

I'm a really good kicker, at least in my own mind... I thank my buddy who spent about 3 months putting me into safeties that required kicking. I mean over 3 months I probably racked more than in my entire life, we were playing nonstop. Once I got onto it I really worked at it to develop skill.

Then, that dirty sob stopped leaving me kicks and started leaving me nothing but jumps or locked up safes! 😅

I'm ok with a jump cue. Not outstanding or anything but I can do it good enough. Honestly I still feel jumping is harder than kicking, as in your form needs to be good and there's a lot that can go wrong. I'm not just talking about not giving BIH, but to actually turn a jump into an opportunity to win the game or play a good safe.

I still much prefer to kick unless it's a shot where jumping is 90% and kicking is 30% or leads to a scratch.

"Just getting a hit" to me is the same as a failed shot. You have to make something happen, even it it's as mundane as leaving a long shot that is slightly off angle or putting balls on the rail. On rare occasions if I have to go for "just a hit" I know I've probably already lost the game.

What appeals to me about jumping is the way a small amount of tip movement and angle produce follow or draw. Left and right. When your cue is level, the spot on the ball you need to hit for all of the above is much bigger imo than when jumping. That contact point decreases a helluva lot. The distance between putting draw on a jump vs follow is way smaller spot. It's a finesse thing. As you guys can attest, we used to jump w/ our daily players.
Not any more.
I recently picked up a CF jump cue from China and I'm having a ball w that thing!! Jumping has turned into a serious weapon in my arsenal bcuz of it. I'm for anything that broadens the scope of this game for me. Ala it's not some petty or silly thing made just bcuz someone could.

Oh I agree, it is not enough to just hit the ball, you have to kick with purpose. If you do not, it’s no better than missing and giving up ball in hand. I learned from this kind of in the same way you did. For me it was when I was stationed in the Philippines in the military. I was a VERY good player when I arrived, and I lost a lot of matches and money in my first few months there when I discovered that what was a very good player stateside, was found wanting against the competition there. No player is as motivated as one that is playing to eat like the players there are. It was humbling to say the least but it also turned me from a very good player into a great player, both the level of competition and by playing the game of choice there at the time, full rack 15 ball rotation. What’s the old saying, iron sharpens iron.
