Jump cues

Who came up with the idea for a short jump cue? Who invented the jump cue? Who made the first jump cue?

Pat Fleming I believe. Joss, Huebler and Meucci all had "jump" cues out long before there were any such things as jump rods. I made my own jump handle for my McDermott shaft in 1990 after seeing the Mike Sigel video where he demonstrated the Joss jump cue.

As far as I know it was Pat Fleming who discovered or came up with the idea of using a short handle attached to a shaft for the purpose of jumping balls.

Good topic. Now can I get a bet down on how long it takes the thread to DEVOLVE into another debate about the merits of jump cues?

Donny, it was Heath who invented the first short jump cue in 1991 - in his clearwater basement - Then Bobby and Eggy started spying on him through his window and stole his invention. Heath is now taking them to court to sue the hell out of them!

I agree with Earl Strictland....jump sticks ruined part of the game! I'm not a fan of whoever invented the jump stick

Jump cues are just a part of the game evolving from the old rules, where you could push out if someone hooked you on accident.

Lol sir! I think you are right.

When I bought my Joss "Color of Money" model in 89/90 timeframe, I also bought the Joss Jump Handle from the same dealer. Of course this doesn't tell you who invented the jump cue......;)

The Flowers / Hueblers were the first manufactered I'd seen in the late 80's.

There's a Szamboti jumper somewhere I think dates to the 70's.

I am sure someone "discovered" jumping was easier with a shorty, either a sawed off house cue, or some borrowed 3C player's masse cue.

I am no historian, but they seemed to fade in around the late 80's. Most of the pro's on the FL Tour were carrying a reg'lar cue to break with, and by about 90 50%+ had jumpers, and by 91-92 you were naked without one. That's also about the time things got extreme, with shaft jumping and all that BS. The 40" rule came along about 93'ish IIRC.

I know that Jim Buss claims the first cue he made was a jump cue, still has it in his shop today! It looks pretty old dunno how old. He also jumps good with it.

Someone who knows Pat Fleming well enough should ask him. It's my understanding that Pat discovered the jumpability of the short cue and that Sammy Jones picked that up from him and that after that Meucci got involved. I like to know the real story whatever it is.
