Jump cues

Now i know this might really really really piss some people off but i am sick and tired of people using jump cues.. Now i know what your saying maby i dont know how to use one or i dont have one but that is not the case... i do have one and it sits at home being used as a door stop.... I keep hearing how players want to play like Efren and so on but come on people i feel like your cheating the game when you use a jump cue.. this is why so many players cant kick at balls and if you are going to jump balls try using a full cue and lets see how good you can jump balls....

What are you doing to change it? If you're doing nothing, then you don't have a basis for complaining.

well just look at the turning stone classic whats one of the best rules that they implemented and the players love it ..................... No jump cues .... I'm not complaining its just that the younger players today dont know or dont spend time learning how to hit other shots ...maby i'm just getting old

I played in a mini tournamnet last night. One of the rules is that if the cue ball leaves the table surface at any point in the game, it is considered a foul.
So if the cue ball just skipped like in my case, foul. No ball in hand pennalty, just loss of shot.

I kick when playing league night. Almost any other time I get the short cue out. Now I'm not gonna jump a full ball when I can attempt a 1-rail kick or easier 2 rail kick, but I like having the option to jump.

Why bother guessing which rails will or won't play true when I can air out the cue ball and get a guaranteed hit on the ball I need to.

Not many things in the game, IMHO, take the wind out of someone's sails faster than when you clear a full ball from 2-3 ball thicknesses away and pocket the intended ball, after they played a jam up safety.

That's just it....it wasn't such a great safety if you can jump out of it. What I think is REALLY funny is the number of folks that think those who can execute with a jump cue are clueless when it comes to kicking....pretty big assumption there.

I'm going to use your thread to refute this solidly. First, why do you hate jump cues? I think I know why.

Stroke is a skill, right?

Aiming, 1,2,3 rail leave patterns, english, throwing an OB, etc are all tools in the tool box. These are top shelf and used on almost every shot. Then we get to second drawer skills like breaking, banking, kicking etc.

Kick and Bank aiming are skills. These skills should be acquired and improved. A player learns them to some level and should continually try to improve these skills. They are a tool in his/her tool box.

Jumping is a skill. With or without a jump cue, jumping takes time to even get to the point where I would attempt it in a game. It is probably a third drawer tool like masse. If I can make a jump cue without moving parts with the tools and materials and class of a playing cue, then I think it should be admissible. Can you jump, jump + english, jump safe, jump kick, etc? If not, get to practicing. . . I fired a guy up a few days ago by jumping some balls and almost making it. My position was such that a plausible 1 or 2 rail kick was not going to happen for me.

Masse is a skill and I think more masse cues should be out there in players cases also. Artistic players can shoot repetatively with them, so pros should probably consider them. At one time, I used to masse with my player for hours a day justt trying to pick up the skill. For me, it was a fourth drawer tool, but you should see the look on a guys face when you masse half the length of the table and hit the 8 ball well enough for it to travel the other half table and go in. Kind of burns a guys butt when his lucky miss creates this shot and you still make it!

No skill should cause a person to rant about others having it. Even if the skill causes a guy to carry an extra cue. Like you point out, the extra cue isn't required, but it helps.

If someone can decide jumping is not a skill, what next? No banking allowed. or no custom cues allowed. What if house cues were required to level the equipment field??

I think it is better to add drawers to my toolbox than to complain about peopl who have more drawers than I do. Frankly, the basics of sinking the object ball, speed and simple 1 - 2 rail leave patterns, if mastered will get you a long ways.

anyone ever see mosconi, crane, greenleaf or eddie taylor jump a ball ? i think some people get upset/annoyed with jump cues because they feel like they take away from the authenticity or the history of the game hell maybe theyre just old school and feel like voicing their opinion about it

Anyone ever see them play in any 10 ball tournaments back in the day?

Ditto...what he said...;)
Nothing wrong with old skool but by the same token there is nothing wrong with technological advances that lead to improvement. I've always tried to live by the "everything in moderation" motto...except when it comes to aquirring pool cues :D

I personally love the use of the short jump cue. I'm pretty decent at jumping and the people I play with are better at it than I am. The reason I like it mostly is because it makes me play better safeties where I actually tuck whitey up on an object ball to where they don't have the option to jump.

I bet there was a time that safties were frowned upon but now looked upon as an important tool. Same thing with banks, kicks, masse and on and on.
I'm also willing to bet that the OP has used most of those shots if not all.
I admire a great jump shot as much as a great saftey or kick. It all takes skill and the vision to see and execute the shot and yes...even a bit of luck sometimes.
