Jump Cues

I hear people say that jump cues should not be allowed. Why is that? I believe that it is from players that don't have jump cues and have likely never learned to jump well. In addition, I think that it is from players that don't think to or know how to play a safety that will not allow someone to be successful using a jump cue. Personally, I like them. I can jump quite well and have all of the confidence that I will hit a ball and in fact my intent is typically not just to make the object ball but either play safe or get shape on my next shot. It is definitely a needed skill set in the one foul ball in hand environment. I am able to kick balls too and also look to pocket a ball or get safe after making a good hit. That is equally as important as being able to shoot a jump shot. To me it is the same as the players saying...playing safe should not be allowed.

You have it the opposite, the people that know how to jump and play are the ones that are against them, like 90% of the pros. People that don't know how to jump or kick properly, they are the ones that get a jump cue to help them. You say you can "jump quite well", is that with your playing cue? My son was 13 when he got a jump cue, his second jump ever he cleared a full ball. If you jump well with a jump cue, you have reached the skill of a 13 yr old using a jump cue for 30 seconds. It's easy to like something when it makes a shot easier for you. I like a lot of things that make things easier, say using a chainsaw to cut logs. But using an axe is more rewarding and skillful.

The only thing I ever hear from an interview with a pro about jump cues is "since everyone uses them I also will but if I had a choice I'd ban them".

Jump cues make it too easy to jump, simple as that. It goes from getting rewarded for a good safe or being punished for a bad shot where you hook yourself to spending $50 on a short cue and executing a shot that anyone can do.

There are probably 10+ pretty long threads on this, and no-one ever changes their stance. It's like religion, if you believe something, you will go against every reasoning you hear against it.

With jump cues it's not how well you learn to jump, is what type of jump cue can you afford to enable you to make the jump. Can't jump a ball that's 1 foot away, no need to get better, just look for a better jump cue. It's like getting a cue that will light up your contact point on a rail for a kick shot. Can't kick? No problem, we got a cue to help you, just type in the number of rails you want to hit and the end position and we'll draw a line for you.

I can jump with a full cue and with a jump cue. I think it's more important to learn how to kick than it is to jump, but I also think it's important to learn how to jump with a jump cue before destroying the cloth with your playing cue.

Personally, I prefer jumping with my break cue.

I'd seen all of the negative feedback against the jump cue, and always thought "oh well, it still takes a lot of skill to use." But when I picked up a jump cue of my own, it did feel a bit unfair that I could so easily get out of nearly any snookered position that wasn't touching an obstructing ball. Pretty decent safeties simply weren't being rewarded because anyone who spent 30min learning to jump would have a pretty good chance of making legal contact. And at the pro level, it makes it that much more complicated to perform a solid safety, and not necessarily in a way that's overall good for the sport, since you wouldn't be jumping in a pickup game at a bar.

If they want to get rid of the jump cue they need to get rid of "One foul". The jump shot is an equalizer against what is a cheap way to win a game. In fact a guy can miss and leave you horribly snookered and he is now the favorite to win the game. One foul is the problem not the jump shot.

I suppose

I realize it is very easy to jump with a jump cue and yes I learned to jump using a full cue before there were jump cues and now it is extremely easy using a jump cue. I still like using them and don't mind if my opponent has one and can use it. I expect it. But, there are a lot of players who have jump cues and still cannot execute a shot well enough to make balls consistently, let alone get a good hit. I have heard the *****ing from players in tournaments where I use a jump cue to make a ball and run out from there. One of those players now carries a jump cue and used it against me in a tournament two years later.
