Just an idea for a future pool reality show

Now when there's more and more talk about the reality shows featuring pool, an idea occurred to me. Why wouldn't we make a reality show about instructors? Each of them gets a team of, for example, 6 individuals who can't hit the CB properly or never even played the game. They get the initial three weeks to train them as much as possible. After that, every week there's a competition between the teams, each team randomly colliding with another one. Among the losers, the team who, according to the judges, showed the worst performance, is eliminated. Among the winners, the best team chosen by the judges wouldn't have to participate the next competition and would therefore be safe from elimination for that round. It would also solve the problem regarding the even number of teams for match-ups.

The purpose of the show would obviously be about who's the most competent instructor. For that reason, the majority of the participants would be chosen among the current notable official instructors, pro players and maybe some famous top-level amateurs. However, there could also be a few "bonus seats" for completely anonymous players who would win the lucky drafts and get a chance to lead a team themselves. Maybe it would be some young potential talents for future instructors, maybe some experienced old guys who remember the era of hustling, maybe just bangers who reported only to have fun, make a name for themselves and try to make the real instructors' lives miserable.

The teams of novices would also be drafted and put into different teams completely by accident.

What do you think? I know I'd personally enjoy watching that show :)

Go fund it and ill watch it. Sounds like a fun show though.

Great Idea

Hey, I gave the idea already, I can't do everything myself! :p

I would love to do something like this. I would love to get a team and teach them to play. That would give me a chance to show people that my methods work really well and new players are the best way to do it. You can count me in.

Sounds like a great idea to me. Has to be better than an arm wrestling show!

I like the idea, but I think it probably would be very boring to watch people in tv playing at that so beginner level

Easier said then done. Every person involves want to be paid, it is not a charity event for pool. Add to that, who would want to watch. No pool player wants to watch horrible players trying to play. They can see that any night in the pool room. I can't in my wildest dreams imagine enough of the public wanting to watch to make it remotely worth any investment. Except if you did it on youtube, no one would buy it for distribution.

I knew many instructors would love this kind of opportunity, that's what gave me the idea in the first place. I'm really glad you like it :)

I thought about that too, that's why it's only an idea. I haven't thought of any good solution to that, but I have a few things in mind. Like, following every beginner's story, his/her personal experience, thoughts and emotions Same for instructors.. Not just watching them train or play, but being in their skin is one thing which could attract more audience. The other thing could be occasional matches between the instructors, so people could see top level pool regularly as well. There can be tons of such little additional stuff which could make the whole thing a lot more interesting, and not just focused solely on the game.

I think it's a great idea.

For those of you who think no one would watch: Understand that everyone on a reality show is a professional actor -- these aren't "real" people. A team of scriptwriters works up the dialog and a director makes it happen.

The keys are:

Use beautiful people whose individual personalities make for dramatic group dynamics (someone is the jerk, someone is the introvert, someone learns quickly, someone else has no hand-eye coordination, etc)

Develop backstories and side-dramas that keep the viewer interested in the characters/teams aside from pool. Love, hate, jealousy, emergency, etc).

The hardest part will be casting the instructors. You can't just use a real instructor...you don't have the time to teach him how to act. Easier to chose an actor and have a real instructor teach him/her how to play/teach.

I would add that all of these new pool players would have to live under the same roof during the entire show. Maybe go to a couple of nice halls on the weekend and practice at home during the week.

Maybe get a couple of the instructors that have a little bad blood between them already to add to the drama. That's why people watch reality tv in the first place. Me personally, I can't stand reality shows, but I would watch one with pool teams.

Pool instructors can't act??? Just watch Freddie The Beard ask for a spot and you'll know what real acting is. Who else Cardone??? The list goes on forever.

Are you saying that the people on Duck Dynasty or Gold Rush or Yukon Men are real actors? I don't think so. I think all you need is a few colorful pool players. And believe me there are hundreds. For example have Earl Strickland coaching one team. Everybody on his team would hate him at the end of the season. If Bobby Pickle was around he could coach one team. Johnny Archer could. Many more to choose from.

I don't care that much if the personal stuff between the participants is scripted, but pool and competition itself would need to be real. Also, no need for instructors to "act", their main role would be to lead the team and train them, they wouldn't humiliate themselves with regular reality soap opera stuff. However, competition between them would certainly add to the drama.
