Just Bought A New J/B Cue!

Yay I'm excited! Got a J&J Jump Break off Ebay for 61 shipped. Plain stained maple with the phenolic tip. It's my birthday present to myself. I have been using a cheap $10 Wal-Mart Sportscraft cue to break with, but the shaft is warped and I'm afraid I'm gonna splinter it soon. If I got the jump cue from the "free jump cue" thread I was gonna hold off and deal with the crappy break cue, but alas I didn't, so I decided to splurge a little bit. I'm gonna have to go without a few things until next payday, but I suppose that's the price you pay.

J&j

I have bought 2 (one for me and one for my brother), and I think they are a 'bargain', and who doesn't love a bargain! I, also, bought an extra shaft for mine (haven't needed it yet though).

I think you will be happy with it, they break and jump good. If you have problems breaking with the phenolic tip, work on your breaking technique,
it does take some getting used to, but once you get it down, you will like it.

Thanks. I read about them on here, did some research before I made the purchase, and everything I read said that J&J makes the best j/b for the price range. That's what I based my decision off of, the opinions of all the fine folks on AZB.

I've broke with a phenolic tip before, never had a problem. I do have a question though. Do you shape a phenolic tip like you do a regular tip (dime/nickel shape, etc)? Is it even possible to shape a phenolic tip? I've never owned one, and I have no idea what all it entails. Do you even want it rounded, or a little flatter? Thanks.

Are phenolic tips allowed in tournament play? DO they wear out Whitey's diameter faster?

Mine are nickel shaped, about a 3/16" thick, and flattened just slightly in the center of the tip. Let us know how good you break with it after you get it, and jump too. (LOL - first time I jumped with mine I went over both balls).

Not on a break cue, but jump cue is fine. Once I get to the point of playing in said tournaments, I will get a second shaft with a hard leather tip for breaking. Maybe the OB break shaft, if I can come up with the funds. But it will work for now.

I've had it almost a week now, but finally had the first chance to really work with it today.

Breaking - I like it. Using my normal break positions (for the tables I play on my usual rotation), it took a little while for me to figure out the speed. It breaks hard. I had to hit my usual sure-fire break shots softer than I'm used to, and when I want to I can really smash the rack. The tip makes it really touchy, but after a couple hours I was able to consistently squat the cueball in the middle of the table on all the racks (9 ball, 10 ball, 8 ball).

Jumping - I've never had a jump cue, and have never learned how to jump a ball. It felt very awkward to me. I know the principles, but I'll need time to put them into practice. I felt stupid at the beginning, but I got it so I could jump the ball 70% of the time towards the end of practice, making the shot a low percentage of the time. I worked on it for about 45 minutes, and made 4 balls I think.

The one thing I will say is that the size of the shaft is going to take more getting used to than any other component. 13.5mm is a huge difference from my 11mm player. Feels like I have a baseball bat between my fingers. My old break cue was 13mm, but it seems like that extra .5 feels like an inch.
