Here's a silly spur-of-the-moment thing I did last night. After having the table for some time at the local dive-bar (with full-size coin-tables), I decided to call it quits for the night. So when I got to the 8-ball, I called a safety... and then pocketed the eight. A friendly melee erupted until people saw me pack-up and leave... smiling.

I'm still curious though -- if this wasn't on a coin-table, should the 8-ball be spotted and then have my opponent go at it... or what?

I don't know about APA, but by BCA rules you can only make the eight-ball in the pocket you nominate, so if you didn't nominate that particular pocket, whether you were playing a safety or not, you lose. If you're playing BCA rules, you should ALWAYS nominate a pocket when you're shooting the eight-ball, even if you are playing a safety. Just in case something happens that you didn't expect, at least you're giving yourself a 1 in 6 chance of accounting for slop. We all know weird, unexpected things happen on pool felt.

Under BCA rules, you lose if you didn't call the pocket for the 8.

Why in the world would you call a safety on the 8 and then deliberately pocket it?
