Just heard this.....

I just found out that my friends Stevie and Bruce aren't planning on playing in the qualifier. I've left messages for both of them, although I'm sure they are hearing the same thing from everyone. I just don't understand it. The best opportunity to ever happen in the sport of pool and they aren't even interested. People are lining up to put them in it and they aren't going to play. If someone has a reason for this, please explain.

The King isn't wearing any clothes!!!! Perhaps they don't like the piper!!!!
Not everyone is blinded by the light (cash).
Time will tell my friend.

Tommy,

I talked to Stevie at the Derby, and he told me there that he had decided not to play the qualifiers. I figured he was there for the IPT qualifier at the Derby, since he didn't show up till Friday night. And I don't know why he didn't play any Derby events or gamble any since he was already there. He didn't give me any reasons except to say that he didn't care to play.

He may be in Greenville this weekend. If he is, maybe he will shed a little more light.

Mike

The last I heard, Stevie got a job with the post office and decided to take that instead of trying to get onto the IPT... getting onto the IPT isn't a for sure thing and a decent gov't job doesn't come around very often either. I respect Stevie for making that decision.

I respect him going the job route also, but this is a chance that may not come around again. If the government is going to pay him $250,000 over the next few years then it is a smart move, otherwise I don't agree with his decision. Someone of Stevie's ability would most definitely win some matches and almost assuredly keep his card for the next year. That is a worst case scenario I believe. The best case scenario is that he wins an event or places very high in a few and makes more money in a couple of years than he could in 10 or 20 working a regular job. I just think its a terrible waste for him and Bruce not to even try.

you have to be kidding. If i played at that caliber and had a chance between the IPT (which has no events scheduled) and a U S Government job. Gotta go with the Gov't job. Maybe he wants to settle down and get married and have a guaranteed income. Who knows. Only a fool would give up a guaranteed Gov't job for a "chance" at 250 large. The 250 large is not guaranteed....JMHO...................................mike

So what does that government job pay 25-35K? He can make that doing what hes been doing the past 15 years.

Last year he said that he had been doing that since he was a teenager and was tired of the life.

Where do you live? People make a heck of a lot more then that at good job with benefits and hopfully some security. Plus he can still play pool. According to current statistics the average government worker makes above $57000. a year plus benefits. My brother-in-law works for the Florida DOT and make over $150,000. My one sister-in-law worked for the Library of congress and retired on around a $40,000 a year pension got her law degree and is now an attorney. I rent a place to a couple, she is a teacher and he is a cop. Their combined income is over $110,000 a year. People who work make money in this country.

lol, do people that work really make money? I had no idea, since I work about 55 hours a week. He could still work 48 weeks out of the year and just play in the 4 events. I would be willing to wager that he would make more in those 4 weeks than he would in the 48 that he "worked".

You are right though, he should have probably given it a shot. It may not have been his best shot because of the job but he may have done well. He should not trade or in any way risk that job though over a pipe dream of playing pool.

I think what it boiled down to was that he had to choose between the new job (gov't jobs are great... great benefits, better than anything Stevie has ever had before). It was between that & the qualifier. I think he made the right decision. Stevie, like myself doesn't have very much education past high school. This job is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him. It's very difficult for civilians to get these jobs. He may never get that job offer again and if he didn't get on the IPT, then what?

He made the right choice, he really did. I love Stevie and he's got a great game but how long is that game going to last with that shake? He did the right thing. Maybe there's a qualifier somewhere that he can enter into without having to miss time off of work and he can still try to get onto the IPT, who knows?

As far as Bruce goes....I have no idea, unless he was given the same job opportunity that Stevie was???

Why not do both?

I mean c'mon. If he's already that good, why not take the job, get a house big enough to put a nice 9 ft. IPT Diamond pool table in it (man I'm such an IPT fanboy...:p ), and practice as much as you can on your days off? With most gov't jobs, you don't have to work on weekends...well, mabey with post office it's different. But, its not like he hasn't been doing this for a minute already, so he maybe he'd only need to practice to keep his skill level up.

Yeah...practice as much as you can, and when the IPT's schedule starts to pan out, as long as you have enough time to take, you can ask for time off and still get paid for it. It'd be like taking time off each month. Not sure how it'd work, but it could probably be done. I know I'd like to try it that way if I had the skills. You'd have to have your own pool table though. I don't see how it could be done any other way.

Doing both isn't exactly that easy. I'm currently job hunting right now & people are asking me about certain tournaments. I can't promise that I'll be able to go to them because I'm going to be the low guy on the totem pole without vacation time. You have to earn your time off. If all these tournaments were just weekend tournaments, that would work, but they're not.

Depending on the job & how many people they already have doing the job will be the deciding factor as to how easy or hard it will be to get the time off. Starting a new job you have to think like you're not getting a day off for a yr until you get in there, get started, and find out otherwise. I'm not saying "no" to the tournaments I've been questioned about. I'm saying it's doubtful but maybe. It will depend on the job.

Timberly, Stevie has had his "shake" for as long as I've known him (6-7 years). Its not like Coltrains where it progressively gets worse. As for Bruce, I'm not sure what the hell he's thinking. He has no job, lives at home, and hardly ever plays. If he doesn't try to qualify it would be a damn shame. And as for your job hunting, I am looking for a secretary! ;)

I've known Stevie for 15 yrs and he didn't always have the shake. I've seen him a few times over the last 10 yrs but it wasn't in the pool room so I didn't know about it until I saw him playing in Athens. I had no way of knowing when it got started and how much or little it's progressed. I'm glad to hear that it hasn't progressively gotten worse. :)

LOL, I'm always looking to move back south. ;)
