to net that as a pool player you probably need to make 100 or more. A 40 k government job is probably worth around 100K per year when you factor the benefits in. It is easily worth an independent job that grosses over 80. Then you have to figure travel for the road/tournament player in which is expensive. Then factor longevity and pay raises. The IPT may or may not take off. Even if it does, the very top players figure to do much better than the middle of the pack guys. The middle guys will do a lot better than pool players have done in years, but it really won't be as lucrative or easy as it appears. The government job has disadvantages compared to being independent, but financially it is much closer than it appears at first glance.

Doing both isn't exactly that easy. I'm currently job hunting right now & people are asking me about certain tournaments. I can't promise that I'll be able to go to them because I'm going to be the low guy on the totem pole without vacation time. You have to earn your time off. If all these tournaments were just weekend tournaments, that would work, but they're not.

Depending on the job & how many people they already have doing the job will be the deciding factor as to how easy or hard it will be to get the time off. Starting a new job you have to think like you're not getting a day off for a yr until you get in there, get started, and find out otherwise. I'm not saying "no" to the tournaments I've been questioned about. I'm saying it's doubtful but maybe. It will depend on the job.

Hi Timberly,

I don't know what your qualifications are, but Kevin Trudeau is paying fantastic money for all kinds of positions on the website. With your love of pool, you might be the right fit for a couple of them. Good luck!

Thanks Linda. I had actually started looking into that last night after Jennie posted the link with job offers on their website. I've since found out that I would need to relocate to the Chicago area. I wouldn't mind the job or relocating but after spending 5 yrs in IA, I can't bring myself to move any place that's colder or has more snow than PA. I'll relocate south but I can't go north. EEK!

Most likely he would start around 25K with guaranteed raises every 6 months. Great hospitalization insurance (which the IPT does not offer). Paid vacation. Never have to worry about getting fired. In short, pretty good security for a person with limited education and nothing to offer an employer. "I can shoot a good stick" doesn't get it.

He most likely looked at the field in the last qualifier and figured his chances were not too good.

Then if he did make it would he be good enough to make the cut. If he got cut then where would he be?

Probably a very good decision on his part. But he might go and try a qualifier just to see how he does. To set his mind at ease.

I just found out that my friends Stevie and Bruce aren't planning on playing in the qualifier. I've left messages for both of them, although I'm sure they are hearing the same thing from everyone. I just don't understand it. The best opportunity to ever happen in the sport of pool and they aren't even interested. People are lining up to put them in it and they aren't going to play. If someone has a reason for this, please explain.

Hey Baby's Arm,
Just to let you know Bruce B. from Athens won a spot into the finals of the pre-qualifers at THE POOL ROOM I, last night. He will playing his next match Thursday night.

PS: I respect STEVIE'S CHOICE.

Stevie's shake

I have watched Stevie shoot for years, and the first time I noticed the shake was a couple of months ago, in Columbia, and it was pitiful. Baby's Arm says it's not getting worse. In the first place, I don't believe that, in the second place, it doesn't need to get worse, it's already pathetic. He can't compete at the level he is used to with that shake, just like Coltrain. It's time for him to move on.

You have to be kidding. I've known Stevie for about 7 years, and not only has his shake not gotten any worse(in that time frame), but he 's also playing as well, if not better, than I've ever seen him. If you dont belive me, ask anyone at the Southern Open, Big Orange classic, or any of the other events he's won lately. As for him giving up, anyone can tell by that comment that you just cant play very well, or youd definetly know better. Happy to hear BB got off the couch long enough to qualify. Whats up over there Babys arm?You guys miss me yet?Matt

Stevie has always had the shake about the same and hits em as good as ever. I missed a nine ball last time I played him while the score was 8 to 7 his way. I commented afterward that I was shaking as bad as Stevie when I missed that fairly easy nine ball. Should have been double hill with me breaking. If only I shot as straight as he does when I am shaking. Mine is nerves. His is "who knows what?"

I have to agree.... he's playing GREAT! He made a great showing in Athens and then snapped off two events right after that if I remember correctly. Having not seen him play in so long, I didn't know if the shake was getting worse or not... he still shoots straight as an arrow and is subject to beat anyone at any given time. Esp if he's been playing & even when he hasn't been playing... it's scary how good he still is after taking a yr or two off...

To cueman- is this the same Chris H. from Atl? This is Matt Bulfin. I know what you mean. I've been fortunate enough to get by Stevie maybe 2 or 3 times, and I'm pretty sure they were all on the bar box!If this is you, did you or any family members(wink wink) play in the ipt qualifiers?
By the way, if anyone sees Stevie before I do, congratulate him on the job for me.

Matt, I moved back to Habersham about 10 months ago. I work about 55 hours a week for my dads dealership, just bought a new house, and am getting married in July. A lot can change in a year huh? I still talk to Dave, Justin, and Jeremy all the time and get to go to Athens once in a while. I still black out when I drink, but I only drink once a month now instead of 3 times a week, lol. I'm also glad to hear that Bruce got off his ass and qualified. I hope he wins the big one too. Maybe we can all get together soon and do it like old times.
Tommy

Hey Baby's Arm, did you play at Bruces' friend/backer Billys' restaurant in Athens? I'm talking about the italian restaurant with 4 9' tables in it Billy co-owned with Vinnie. I worked 70+ hrs a week then and didn't play much so I can't remember if I ever met you there or at Murphys Brass Rail.

I used to watch BB play there sometimes; he'd play the 10 ball ghost for 100/rack betting with some college kids. He was supposed to go fishing on my pond on double bridges road in Athens but I had to move back to California in 1999.

Anyway, I hope Bruce does well. He's a nice guy and a pretty freakin good player. Next time you're in Athens, get some jamaican food on Milledge for me-damn I miss that place.

He absolutely made the right choice. I was faced with a similar decision many years ago, and decided (after going from rags to riches back to rags many times in my abbreviated pool hustler career) to return to the military. I retired after 28 years and now get a 30K a year pension. If I had continued with pool, I'd be old, broke, no credit, no house, probably no family, and wondering where I went wrong. Being a pro pool player is a tough endeavor; as well as Stevie plays, he can work a "straight job" and still have a nice supplemental income from pool. The IPT is enticing, but IF you qualify for a tour card, you still have to fade 149 great players every event, travel expenses, etc. - pretty Darwinian, only the top bananas will make great money. Nothing wrong with working and playing pool on the side.

Re: Stevie Moore

Hey Everone,
I talked with Stevie friday night, first night of the IPT Qualifer.
Stevie advised me he will be a mail carrier, & will start learning his first route Tue 1/31/06. Stevie is looking for a more secure lifestyle than pool players have known in the past. Stevies game is just a hair below the pro's. Its just that he's tired of the life style, that is known in the poolplayer world. He's just looking for a more normal lifestyle.
He never mentioned his shake being a problem. Nor did the subject come up.

"Have a nice day",
Lamar

Lifes a Gamble

How can you play pool as long as Stevie has, and reach the level he has , hoping your whole life for something like the IPT to happen to pool and pool players and not try to qualify? He'll regret this decission the rest of his life. And what's so special about government jobs? I personally never liked to limit myself. He'll be bored to death in 6 months max with that job. Stevie, get in stroke and qualify. You only live once! You can do it! You were born to play pool!

Yep it is me. My son and I both played a few of the pre qualifiers. Everyone I played caught a gear against me and I went 0-3. Israel played 5 of them and made it all the way to the finals of the last one and got beat by Cliff Joyner.
