Kamui black soft or medium?

Johnny, interesting to hear your DZ came with a Kamui as the DZ I picked up a few months back came with a Triangle. Played with that tip for a little over a month and changed it to a Ultraskin black medium and so far am happier with that. I did get a 30" shaft at 12.8mm with it. I really, really, like the feel and hit of his cues, although now my wife has declared the DZ is hers, and given me back a Schon she took from me before. Would like to see a picture of your cue as I have been in talks with him to make me a more plain no wrap.
To clarify, I bought mine mid-Sept from forum member "phreaticus", who had it in the for sale section here.
A week later I called Bob Dzuricky to verify the wood, which was Bolivian Rosewood, just as described.
Phreaticus ordered it from Bob, so I imagine he ordered the Kamui Clear medium.
Bob didn't immediately the cue until I mentioned that it was 30" and 12.25mm.
The cue plays fantastic, with very little deflection that I can notice. I'm not at all into CF and don't really care about deflection,
I'm strictly old school. It has a Tomahawk ferrule so that may help as well as the thin shaft.
I'm a Chandivert Champion, Triangle, and LePro fan but I'm gonna leave the Kamui on for at least a few weeks.
The cue was still new and I could not have found a better person to deal with than "phreaticus".
And talking with Bob for 15 minutes or so was pure pleasure and the icing on the cake.

All I do on this topic is piss off some people. Sorry in advance-we are still friends😀

Get a good Triangle and you’ll be just fine. Might take a couple tries, but it’s worth the effort.

https://www.kamuibrand.com/en/hardness-standard They rate them the same for hardness but differently for elasticity. Whatever. The browns are harder. Always have been.
Thanks for the link. I saw the same chart on some drink coasters a while back.

Looking at the chart again I was mistaken. The way the label their x and y axis is odd. But, the chart seems to say that the blacks and browns are the exact same hardness. But, the blacks are more elastic across the board.

They say (spelling and grammar errors theirs):
Elasticity stands for bouncing force generated when a tip impacts a cue ball with the speed of acceleration.
When elastlicity of a tip gets higher, the contact time of the tip and cue ball gets longer so that you can have more spin on a cue ball and feel bouncy shot feeling.
On the other hand, the contact time is shrotend as elasticity gets lower. So that you can get more solid shot feeling.

Seems odd to me that the blacks are more "bouncy" and the browns are more "solid". Yet the blacks seem to play harder?

Not to me. The browns have always felt harder/faster.

I always liked Le Pro tips until I kept getting a bunch of crappy ones that always felt spongy.

I have a few Le Pro’s left over. Barry gave me a couple. Some red back some black back. They are great. I’ll use them for sure, when I start playing again and am hitting the ball good, then I’ll bust them out.

I have some Chandevert (spelled wrong of course) tips in wax that are a million years old too. I bought them 30 years ago. I’ll get a pic of them sometime. I saw them a week ago. They are great too.

You don't irk me in the slightest. Thanks for all of your posts and what you contribute. I approve of Fatboy approved posts.

As for Triangles. One of the used cues I bought came with a well worn one. It plays just fine and I left it on. No complaints.

As for it possibly taking a couple of tries to get a good Triangle tip. I've heard that said a number of times by more than you.

I remember someone saying on here a while back that their secret to getting a good Triangle was to buy the 14mm ones and trim them down. Claimed that they were made from thicker hide and that resulted in less bad ones?!

Also, I have no experience with this and I don't know if this applies to Triangles, but have heard people on here say with non-layered tips that they buy a box and toss them in a sink of water. They keep the sinkers and toss the floaters.

Yes the 14-15mm biggest you can get are the most consistent. Cut those down. Denis Searing does that. Because the thickest part of the hide comes from smaller areas so more consistent he said-that what Triangle told him. Seems reasonable to me.

It does take a few tries sometimes, occasionally you’ll get 3-4 in a row that are great and last without glazing over. Some are toast after 10 hours. But when you get a good one ya got something g special. Same as the old Le Pro’s.

Having said all that, I’ve tried most layered tips and same thing some good some bad, they are a bit more consistent for sure. For me however I don’t mind the process and search for a good tip. It’s kinda fun actually.

Have a great weekend

QC at Tweeten seems to have gotten better. Not near as many 'throw aways'.

How 'bout neither?? Try a Ultraskin med. Great tips. IMO Kamui are very over-rated. The Black's tend to glaze pretty quick.
I have tried Kamui and didn't like them at all. I too played an Everest for many years. I recently bought a new Predator that came with a Predator Victory Tip. (medium). Now that is my favorite tip and have had it installed on my Cutec Synergy shaft as well. It holds chalk great, Holds shape without mushrooming, and I have yet to miscue with it. Also I use Predator Chalk which is better than most without paying a stupid price.

I am more confident with a Triangle because i admit im not a person that chalks every shot and I havent found a layered tip that holds chalk as well as a Triangle. I will shoot a whole game and never miscue with a Triangle tip only time i have to chalk is if im drawing or using a very hard stroke on top spin. If i were to use a Layered tip it would be old Japan Moori medium. I will not use dyed black tips because I used to do leatherwork. The black tips have to be dyed and the two dyes used will be either alcohol based or oil dye. Oil is why a tip will glaze easily and alcohol will dry the leather out. Kamui brown S is what i would go with if you are wanting to try a Kamui. I had Kamui brown M on my two Blackcreek shafts they was great until they get a little thin then they are to hard.
