Is a Kasson Montecillo a decent table for the family?
Not looking for a Gold Crown, just a good decent table for the the family.

I've found one locally with an asking price of $775.
Original owners and have never had it re-covered; bumpers are completely shot though - have a feeling I might be able to get it for $600 as a result of needing new bumpers.

Thoughts?

Quite a few tables on Craigs List rights now.
Generally thoughts on the following regarding look or stay away:
- Southern Legacy
- Highland Billiards
- Austin
(I know I should generally be safe w/ Brunswick & Olhausen)

Yes, it's an ok table...meaning you won't spend too much...and you'll get your moneys worth in the long run.

I was a Kasson dealer in the late 90's. The furniture type hardwood tables were pretty decent. The Monticello new would have been in the $2K neighborhood. Kasson used K66 cushions with a flex strip rather then a wood featherstrip and should have OIS slate - check for a white oval sticker under the slate. If the cushions seem hard (not pliable) then replacing them is recommended during setup if you happen to buy that table.

I find it odd that you still see new Kassons advertised since the company shut down a long time ago. There was another company that supposedly bought the brand name but I don't know if the plant in Babbit, MN is still making tables for them or possibly under a different brand.

Make sure you check the cushions. A lot of Kassons I have run across lately have been equipped with those cheap Cin Caro cushions and they have are been dead.

The cushions are COMPLETELY shot, hard as a rock.
Local movers are quoting $140 to $175 for new cushions, obviously just a generic cushion.
I'm thinking of offering $500.00
Thoughts considering adding new cushions?

Couple side questions (I'll post pics of other table later, limited bandwidth right now running thru phone as our service is down.)

- Anyone heard of Highland Billiards?
Looked at a table tonight that looked nice. Had a thin stamped plate on the apron down low. Can't find anything online about them.

Also, if cloth is in good shape how often is it able to be re-used when moving a table?
I assume it depends on how it was installed.

Some mechanics opinions may differ on this but I replace all rail cloth when I redo a set of cushions, it is the most inexpensive time to redo the cloth at the time of install. Regardless, I wouldn't offer $500 for a table with dead cushions, see if he can go lower as you will need to replace the bumpers.

Thanks for the responses.

RE: salvaging cloth - I should have been more clear, more of a general question as the Highland table I looked at last night had cloth that was in very good condition with good cushions. I understand if replacing the cushions it only makes sense (required) to replace the cloth.

I was afraid an offer of $500 for the Kasson would be too much of a low ball offer (I understand it never hurts to ask...).
What do think a 'fair' offer would be?
The other part of the equation is my wife is OK with the Kasson (style) but would prefer a darker finish. Would trying to refinish the Kasson Monticello be a complete nightmare to attempt by a DIY'er (after installed with new cloth and best precautions to protect cushion cloth from stain)?

Yes if the table is setup. Much easier to refinish in pieces and then assemble the table.

I'd bump that offer to $600 and hope to haggle somewhere between that and $700 (still a good buy). The fact the cushions are shot is a good negotiating point.
