Keeping a log-spreadsheet

I have been thinking about keeping a log that would primarily analyze my $ spent vs. $ earned. This would include action and tournaments. I don't play league but presumably, you could include that too. I like Microsoft Excel so that is likely what I would use.

If you had enough data, you could figure out pretty easily where you fair best (tournament vs. action) and you could figure out what formats favor you. Heck, you could even find out which players you lose to, analyze their game, and come up with a way to play against them specifically.

Money is a helluva motivator too. If you see a losing streak or that you are going to suddenly be down over a long period of time, this may make you refocus and practice. Along those lines, you could also log your practice and compare that to how your playing at the time. That could give you some ideas regarding how your practice is affecting your game.

I'm in the brainstorming phase right now and was wondering what others though and whether or not anyone else has done this.

I'm sure some analytically-minded pool players do this.
I have heard most poker pros do this.

Sounds like a very good idea to me, because what you "think" is happening is often much different than the facts.

I have some free time tomorrow so I'm going to start on it then. Thanks for your feedback. Very good point about perception and reality.

I do this to keep up with who I'm gambling with, how I did against them and what the game was. This helps me remember how I normally play someone and how I'm doing overall.

This is a great idea. I think it would be great for analysis and motivation both. But if you add time spent overall you will probably find you are earning a fairly low hourly rate.

I thought

about doing this for a long time, but there is too much record-keeping involved, especially if you played or matched up very often.

I, now, only track one statistic, and that is the win percentage of hill-to-hill
matches. I, feel, that that shows you how much 'grit' you have in a pressure situation. Besides that, it also shows how mentally tough you are.

Yep, been doing it for years

I have kept a record of all gambling matches (and every dollar spent on table time) since August of 2008. It lets me know what the true costs of my hobby are and comes in handy when I can't recall how I matched up with someone in the past. But I'm retired, have lots of time, and have been using spreadsheets on computers for about 30 years.

i started something similar to this, click on "SinCityAction" Link in my signature and then click on Win Loss Totals on the right.

I used to do the same thing when I was in college then I would analyze my games in class. I did amazingly good for a while, but realized I was only playing easy games. That soon ran out and I went back to losing.

I did it for 3 years. I will not go into specifics, but I feel it was helpful. The best use was keeping up with how I matched up and other players win percentage when I side bet. This could then be checked against info you have on how players match up with each other.

I must say, I did WAAAAYYYY better before moving to St Louis.
