Keeping it all in Perspective

I can hardly contain my happiness, today I am playing in a little local tournament! The thing is, almost six weeks ago I fell badly (I will spare you the embarrassing details) and fractured my right elbow. Yes, that one!
It's funny, I still remember thinking, as I walked home, cradling my injured arm, I think I am not going to be able to play league tonight...
Ha...!

I had no idea till the Doc told me in the ER that it was broken. Since I picked up a cue about 10 years ago, I have not gone more than a week without playing. I was devastated at the prognosis and scared. For the last year I have been working with two great coaches and my game had really improved, I was playing so well and I had important events coming up!

Not to mention my ahhh job, which is fairly physical.

After a bad experience with a uncaring orthopedic Doc, who could care less about my ability to handle a camera, let alone a cue. I hunted down and found a group specializing in Sports Medicine. WOW, what a difference it makes to have Doctors that actually give a s#@*!

They put me right into physical therapy and monitored me very closely, even getting me a cat scan done for free, since I do not have insurance.
Thursday, they okayed me to play! I still have a ways to go (I still can not brush my teeth; but some how I can play) but I am just so happy to be back in that smokey, smelly place!

I just want to express how amazing the gift is we have, for a week after the injury, I kept seeing people who were really hurt. A guy without legs etc...and was reminded that I was very lucky. I really was, I could have broken my neck in that fall. I know I can not lose today because I have already won!

xox,
Cuechick

Great story, Cuechick. Thanks for posting it. As a pool player for many years and a fellow pro photographer for nearly as many, I can certainly relate. Great that you can see life so clearly. Must be the photographer in you!

That's a fine post. A leg injury put me out of commission for ten months in 1978, so I know what you're feeling. Pool is like a lot of things in life in that you don't fully appreciate it until you lose it, and when you get it back you love it more than you ever did, and find great compassion for those who must endure without it.

So, good luck in your tournament, and most of all, welcome back to the game you love.

It's funny how an injury can make you realize how much you truly love this game, any player that has been hurt and missed some time away from the felt is aware of just how blessed we are. Good luck in the tournament cuechick and let us know how you make out!

About 20 years ago I severely dislocated my right shoulder in a skiing accident and had it strapped to my chest for weeks and then months of physical therapy to follow.

I continued to play the entire time left handed jacked up. Matched up well and even made a few bucks.;)

where there's a will....

I did okay, 9-12, I lost a hill match to make it to tomorrow, I think due to fatigue and some bad rolls. I am happy though...I did not expect to play this well, this soon and I ran a table and made 2 9's on the break! Not bad for a chick with a broken elbow!

Treating it right now with big ice pack and a margarita ;)!

By the way Vagabond, I do brush my teeth, but with my left hand (which is pretty wierd, I challenge everyone to give it a try). Don't want anyone out there thinking I am walking around with a dirty mouth!

I only wish I could play lefty, I am like a drunk person who has never touched a cue before with my left side!

u may consider buying electric brush ( made by Braun or some other good brand) and to use an electric brush one does not require much motion in the elbow joint.Electric brushes are far superior than the traditional brushes in removing the plaques. You will find the electric brushes in WalMart.
wishing you for quick & complete healing.:)

Not a bad idea, but the reason I can not brush my teeth is not the motion but I can not bend my arm enough to reach my mouth! :(
