Going on college visit with my son. Uni of Kentucky and Uni of Tennessee.

Gonna be in Lexington on Saturday night, arrival, and then all day Sunday, and head for Knoxville Monday morning. Gonna stay the night as well in Knoxville and then head home on Tuesday.

Any nice places to play pool in these parts ???

And if you know of a great Mexican restaurant in these parts, I'll take that too ;)

Hi RJ. Lexington is a nice town to visit for sure. As for pool, we only have a few options unfortunately. The two remaining billiards halls are Yesterdays billiards at 410 W Vine St #139, Lexington, KY 40507 and The Silver Cue at 694 E New Circle Rd, Lexington, KY 40505. Both have furniture grade tables of varying quality. The Silver Cue does offer up valley bar boxes and a few 9' tables, though they mostly have 8' tables. Yesterday's has all 8' steepleton talbes. Of the two, Yesterday's has better ambiance and is centrally located in the lower level of Rupp Arena. It will be mobbed if UK is playing there, though they are not scheduled to play on Saturday. The Silver Cue has more actual pool players and if you are looking for some action, then that will be the place, though action is scarce these days.

As for Mexican fare, I would recommend El Rancho Tapatia located at 138 Burt Rd, Lexington, KY 40503 is an excellent option. Can't really go wrong with anything on the menu, though there tamales and chille relleno (w/ beef) is exceptional. Fajita's are always a winner as well, as are the enchilada's with mole sauce. It is located just a few miles away from UK campus.

El Toro located at 1917 Nicholasville Road, Lexington KY 40503 is good as well. Can't really go wrong with either of these.

If you like Greek fare, The Athenian Grill is quite tasty.

Best value for higher end fare (though their burgers are quite good too) might be The Tulip on Romany Road.

Edit: can't leave out Winchell's on Southland drive. Everything they serve is delicious and they have the best hot wings/buffalo chicken sandwich ever. Smoked jalapeno sauce is great. IF you can successfully eat all 12 of their hottest wings, then they are on the house. They are firey hot and taste great. My best effort is 4 then I called it quits. They also serve some great local fare like the KY Hot Brown. Great for breakfast too.

My wife and I are foodies and I could go on given that we have so many good options and genres here. Let me know if you need/want any more suggestions.

And welcome to the South, er, the north of the South, lol.

Cheers,

JL

OK, Yesterday's it is ;) We'll give the Mexican place a try as well.

If you feel like shooting few games on Sunday night, stop by !!

I might just be able to make it on Sunday night. Just be aware that the UK game will be there @ Rupp, scheduled for 9 pm. I've not been there on game night in a long while, but I would expect it to get quite busy.

I will pm you my phone #, feel free to text if you need anything.

Yeah, I heard this school is known for a winning a few basketball games, and quite a few national championships :)

Thanks for the info, gentlemen. Are these places I'd be able to go into and not worry about getting profiled?

Hi RJ. There was a cue maker that used to play at Pyramid named Bill Howard. He and his wife retired to Louisville. I do not have contact info for him but Matt might. Kentucky is beautiful!! Happy hunting... Go Heels.

Here was one of my favorite Mexican restaurants (that appears to still be open), when I lived in Lexington (from 2008 until 2010).

Durango's Mexican Restaurant
Idle Hour Shopping Center,
2121 Richmond Rd #150
Lexington, KY 40502

I really loved their food. There are many other places, but that is the one that stands out the best in my memory.

For pool, there is Yesterday's downtown (at, 410 W Vine St) , in the convention center, and there is also Silver Cue Billiards Bar that is out on New Circle Rd (694 E New Circle Rd), near Winchester Rd.

I thought that was the Convention center that Yesterday's was located in. Silly me I guess, lol. I really miss Lexington. Such a nice city. Much nicer then Louisville, in my opinion. There was this really great vegan breakfast place downtown, but I can't remember the name of it. If it is still open, then I would highly recommend anyone to eat there for breakfast. They had the best french toast I ever had. So many great restaurant options, but the pool scene was really depressing.

Edit: I just found the name of that Breakfast place downtown, and it appears to still be open.
