Kick shots

I played a match today and noticed that my opponent, a weaker player than myself, always tried to make the ball when kicking.

It got me thinking of how different people look at kickshots. Some players are just satisfied if they even hit the ball, while others try to make it, and others again has a safety in mind.

During our match today my opponent sold out on 2 shots where I would not try to kick the ball in, but would play safety, and he choose to try to pocket the ball. The layouts were almost the same on both shots.

Kickshot number 1:
He tried to make the ball, almost did, but the one ball ended up near the pocket and the cueball ended up so I could easily make the ball and take the game. How I would play the kickshot in the diagram:

Kickshot number 2:
Almost same layout, he kicked trying to make the ball. Same result with the one ball near the corner pocket, open table for me and I won the game and in the end the match. How I would play the kickshot in the diagram:

Do you have any experiences with kick-shots, where your opponent really got you in a trap and you found a way to kick yourselves out of it and put him in a safety? Put it in the diagram and show us ;)

This shot came up for me during a practice game with another player on Monday, he missed the shot and left me behind the 7. I played for the hit on the 5 on the side to bring it to the rail for shape on the 6, and it worked. Figure the kick for me would be maybe 20% to hit on the right side like that with the proper speed.

EDIT - I just looked closer at what I drew, the 7 was blocking the 5 fully, in the picture here you can see the edge to cut it up table.

Bank-carom shot

When waiting for my semifinal-match of today's tournament I practised and found myself almost in the position below. Then I remembered that Roberto Gomez had showed this shot to me a year ago, and I decided to give it a try. So I put the balls in the position shown, and banked the 8 in the long rail straight forward, stopped the cueball, and the 8 hit the cueball and then slided in the corner pocket. The cueball slides a little to the right, but you still get position for the 9.

Pretty cool shot

ive been working on kick shots alot over the past couple of months and not just single rail kicks.
this is one of my most recent jams i got out of:

CueTable Help

i was practicing with another room regular the other night and while i was shooting, he made a comment to another player, something like 'if i had to bet on anyone to kick at a ball and make it, it would be on him' and pointed at me.
made me feel kinda good, but then it took me a good few rounds to get my kicks back, haha!

This is one of my favorites.

Many players just kick to hit the ball. Others will kick to make balls or play safety. It's powerful tool to have in your arsenal.

FUN shot...but I'd have to be WAY ahead in an alternate break match to give up the automatic 3 ball run. If the CB hits the 9 on the right side you could get in serious trouble with the 5 ball if the CB comes to rest near the middle of the top long rail.

Jim,

The diagram is just to display the shot. If you look at page 2 (lower right corner of the table diagram), and apply a strong draw stroke, you can miss the 9 and get good shape for the 5 and out.

kicking systems and the pool gods

The pool gods awaken about once a year to revisit, and expand upon the topic of kicking systems.

I have provided a link to "about midway" into a thread on this forum, when I started to get interested
and involved, in debunking, analyzing, and determining the physical and mathematical parameters
and boundaries of a reference pool table.

Enjoy... http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?p=618015#post618015

Roy, in the two diagramed shots, those are pretty thin cuts if your opponent was triing to pot the 1 ball in the closest corner. I won't try that fine a kick-cut, the chances of missing it by a bit and fouling is too great. Your alternative kick-safeties look better given those cue-table angles.

One interesting subject on kicking is the effect of top and bottom. Knowing how to kick full and make the cue ball stop, roll forward, or back to the rail is a very handy skill in the execution of kick safeties.
