Russ, I hope you didn't think I was referring to you... In the youtube clip, *Danny* said
he was never in an argument.
This thread also reminds me of something that happened a while back. I'm not the bragging
type, so it's very hard for me to write this post, but I'll try.
OK, I can play. Sometimes, on rare occasions, it is amazing. Now keep in mind, until
recently, I have always had a steady and well paying engineering job, and treated pool
mostly as a hobby. But in the past people have asked me why I never tried playing
professionally. I have been told that my break is better than any pro's they have ever
seen. So anyway, here I was in a job, and just completed a project for a company.
They had been trying to solve 2 problems in an operating system for about 5 years, and
some other companies had tried to do this, and gave up. Motorola even tried it 3 times
from what I heard. OK, so one day I go to work and find that about 1/3 of the company
is getting laid off, myself included. And, we had about an hour and a half to get off the
premises. Needless to say, I was surprised and really pi$$sed off, since I had been pouring
my heart out for this company, etc..
So, I decided to get back into pool. I went to a regional tournament, and I draw Danny
Basavich's manager or partner or whatever. A really nice guy, in fact one of the nicest I
ever met. Earlier I met him out in the smoking area, and he was looking for a cigarette,
since he was running late, getting to the tournament, and didn't have any time to get some.
We had a nice conversation outside, and had mentioned I had gotten *no* sleep the night
before, since everyone was wondering why I was yawning every 30 seconds or so, and my
eyes were watering. Anyway, later I have to play this guy. Tom Dennehey I believe was
his name. Well, being so pi$$ed about losing my job, must have brought out the killer instinct
in me. I smoked him. I mean badly. The few times I was in the chair, I actually had my eyes
closed, and just listened, I was so exhausted. As soon as I heard the balls click, I waited for
either the sound of a rail, a ball drop, a ball rattle, or nothing. If I heard a rattle or nothing, I
quickly opened my eyes, and literally jumped out of my chair and approached the table.
This must have really affected him. At 6-1 in a race to seven he unscrewed his stick and said
"that's enough". I went to shake his hand, and I can't actually remember if we shook or not.
But I remember distinctly some of his words. He might have thought I was lying about not
getting any sleep. He was so mad. I said something like "I never expected to shoot that well
after not getting any sleep". And he replied: "Yeh, right. You should take that act on the road."
And I said "What?", and he replied: "Come on, you never miss. All those bank shots,
combination shots, caroms to the nine? I don't believe you about the "no sleep". " I
tried to convince him, and he just stormed out saying "You should take that act on the road".
Anyway, if you ever see him, ask him about the guy he played in Chelmsford, MA that wore the
bright orange Ralf Lauren dress shirt that didn't get any sleep the night before the tournament.
I wonder if he remembers, but I think he will never forget it! I won't!
