Kid Delicious on public radio

Danny 'Kid Delicious' Basavich was on National Public Radio this morning as part of Bill Littlefield's "Only a Game" show. He was talking about his book of course, and they also had the author on, whose name I am drawing a blank on at the moment. The author had been at DCC a couple of years ago, working on a feature for Sports Illustrated that never ran :(

Edit: the show is kind of long, and the Kid Delicious segment is about 45 minutes in -- which you can jump forward to by pausing and scrolling over...I think :)

I heard this too. Danny also mentioned that there's a Kid Delicious movie in the works, and they're talking to Jack Black to star as Mr. Tasty.

Everybody's got a book/movie deal but me...

"Running The Table"

There have been lots of stories -- real and fictional -- about how various people have made a lot of money hustling pool.

What distinguishes Running the Table, at least according to author L. Jon Wertheim, is that Danny Basavich, aka "Kid Delicious," saves his life by hustling pool. Until he found his way to a pool table, Basavich was pretty much a child without resources who suffered from depression so severe that some days he couldn't get out of bed. Once he had a cue in his hands, he discovered that he had not only an aptitude for the game, but the extraordinary patience necessary to play the game not just well, but brilliantly.

Of course to some extent brilliance is Basavich's undoing. He reaches a point where even when he disguises himself, pool players all over the country recognize him. Eventually nobody will play him unless he gives them advantages not even the most accomplished hustler could overcome. As playing pool professionally is still a precarious proposition, Basavich would seem to be facing an uncertain future, which is part of the reason why Wertheim concludes the story of Kid Delicious with the observation that Danny's parents think it might be time for their boy to find a real job.

Make it three!!

I listen regularly on the weekends. Theres some pretty good listening on there.

Not sure why I dont tune in during the week more but I dont.

I heard it this am in CO on my way to work, pulled into a breakfast joint and sat and listen, it was real, and it'll work, our modern day Minnesota Fats, and we all know we can sure use another Fatty, and thats the straights.

Anyone who pays federal income taxes might as well enjoy whatever they like on NPR. We're paying for it...:D

I like Jack black! I think he is funny cool guy! And its about time they come up with another cool pool movie! I dun seem to get tired of watching color of money. But it would be nice to see another in this life time! There were a few others but they did not quite cut it. Maybe i am expecting too much.
