Look, I gotta admit it...twice a night or so, when I hear kiddie hour get started on the juke box, I get distracted and it becomes difficult for me to play my best pool, which is already very limited.

I am curious though, for all of you guys/gals, who frequent a pool room. What would you think I am talking about, when I use the term; "Kiddie Hour?"

It is a term that I came up with, to describe a certain type of noise that is emitted from the juke box.

If there was a better, or more accurate term, I would be happy to use it, but I came up with the term I use, because to me...it is the most accurate.

So...if you would be kind enough to indulge me, please give me your gut feeling of what I am describing.

For me it's easy. Off switch on my hearing aids. Others wear ear plugs. During leagues I don't really notice. Yes their music sucks.

When I hear your phrase Kiddie Hour it makes me think of country music. Only a kid could find something so awful like country music amusing enough to listen to for fun.

Mile High Billiards in Arvada Colorado has an internet juke box. you can play just about any song ever recorded.
there is a sign on it that states any song played that is deemed offensive by management will be canceled with no refund.
Its not perfect but its a start.

It makes me think of Friday, and Saturday nights at the pool room, I beg your pardon, the sports bar and grill.
Those are the two nights the kids from nearby Missouri State come by and have their weekly drinking contests. The pool tables are only there to catch spilled beer.
Years back, the clientele was much different. Most of the youngsters then were post high schrool kids with jobs in the trades (electricians, painters, bricklayers, etc.). The economy has since replaced them with college students holding daddy's credit card.
Such is life.

Always bothers me when the internet juke box starts up because it is so loud but after 5 seconds I forget it's on because I am looking at the table.

Billiardthought- A question I have for you is; What does a preference for country music have to do with being a kid?

You know, as I have gone through life, I have found that our comments make our credibility with others, either grow...or diminish.

While not a big fan of country music, I am failing to make the connection that enjoying country music has, to being a kid.

Maybe you can enlighten me?

For starters, anything noise that comes out of the juke box that is not created by an instrument.

That covers a few genres-you fill in the blanks.

Pool room owners need to understand that many players do not come into the pool room to indulge in loud music of any kind, so turn the volume DOWN.

Well, so as not to keep everybody guessing for too long about why I named it; "Kiddie Hour", I'll go ahead and spill the beans.

When I hear that (Sorry, I cannot bring myself to the point of calling it music, but rather, NOISE) noise start playing, in which the person emitting the noise, is using slang for virtually any body part or...any sexual act, it reminds me of 12-15 year old kids, who are under the impression that they now know all there is to know about sex, because they have learned some of the slang.

So...as they use those terms, they kinda giggle, as they use the jargon.

Honestly...I often ask those around me, when that noise gets started, "Is there a 13 year old walking around in here selecting what comes out of the jukebox?"

I also ask; "How is it even possible, that an adult would play this noise?"

Seriously! The words used in that noise, sounds just like a bunch of adolescent kids, who are having a party...and they may have convinced an adult to buy them some beer at the local store.

It certainly isn't adult music! Uhhhhh, that is, if you consider an adult to be a mature person, who respects his/her fellow man and has had enough experience with life, that they can communicate without doing it in a way which shows no ability to talk without using words which could be embarrassing to others.

Those words don't embarrass me! But you see...I wouldn't base my selection of words upon what embarrasses me or not. Hopefully...I've matured enough to use words which would not make others uncomfortable.

Again though...for me to think that way, would have to mean that I have grown up. Not just physically but intellectually and emotionally.

Do you know, I saw a man and his (about 10 year old) son, walk out of a pool room one time.

That man said to me; "I'll never again in my life, set foot in that place again."

Curious....I asked him why?

He said; "Because the music that was being played, was so disgusting...that he would never want to subject his son, who doesn't quite understand the world, sex, slang, and other things yet, to be subjected to that kind of thing, without first understanding how to deal with it in the right frame of mind."

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to believe that he told others about his experience there.

Neither does it take a brain surgeon to understand that a reputation will be established by that pool room, of having that kind of thing going on in there.

Neither does it take a genius to understand that the seedy history of pool rooms would further be perpetuated by these kinds of things happening.

One last thing, the noise being played in there, is usually played by people who can't seem to understand that NOBODY wants to see their underwear.

But...you see, those who like to wear their trousers so low that their butt is hanging out, are also adolescents, who simply need to grow up.

It is no coincidence, that those who play that noise, are most often, those who don't have enough understanding, to pull their pants up.

Growing up is not easy sometimes. In fact, it is not for kids. It takes a man to grow up.

A man is not someone who can use all the slang he wants, or a someone who likes to play noise which vividly describes having sex with whomever they choose.

Growing up, entails being responsible for the things you do and learning to respect your fellow man, and not just think that whatever you happen to enjoy, should be thrust upon others.

Lastly...I will admit that when I do see those people who used to like to wear their pants around their thighs and...who used to play that noise, finally get to the point that they admit they were being childish...and they start to learn what it truly means to respect their fellow man, it does make me feel proud of them.

What does confuse me though, is that the owners of a pool room, would allow that junk to be played in their establishment.

Why?

Because it might possibly bring in a few people who would not otherwise be there. But...it will certainly make a far greater number of people...stay away!

We have a daily event that is comparable...

beer, center console, fower buh fower, mud slingin, daddys tractor, sweet as dixie crystal sugar shaker, grandmawz yarn, huckle-buck from Pasco by god county, Trump lovin, PBR in a can, gimme one o dem corn dawgs missy!, whos boy are yew?, beer

hour... or something

When I started playing again about 15 years ago, a place opened up within a mile of where I worked. It was great - 30 7' tables, 9 9' tables, along with some other things like darts, foosball, etc. It was a sports bar, but the focus was on pool; with weekly tournaments and league.

Now some 15 years later, more sports bar focused and although they still have quite a few tables, 3 of the 9' tables have been replaced by a fireplace and lounge area. A few of the 7' tables have been removed too; due to new owners and a new vision I guess. They still have an in-house league on Monday night, but no weekly tournaments. A friend and I even offered to run a Sat night tournament and got a "we'll think about it" response!

It's still nice to have the place; but without more promotion and perhaps a larger source of players, it is what it is - the owners are headed where the money is.

After a year and a half of playing in 2 traveling leagues around Wichita, I have been to places I didn't know existed! Some of these places have weekend tournaments that I'm looking into.

Very well said!!!!! :bow-down:

My music is better then yers. Wtf, your in public, wear headphones or stay home. If 100 people are in the pool room Im willing to bet at any given time 75% of the music would not be their first choice. Sounds like your just getting old.

While you may not share the same taste in music as some of the other clientele, they are supporting the same business that you are. Something that people fail to think about is the fact that pool halls are in the business of making money. The 'kiddies', of which you speak, likely spend much more money in that pool hall than the majority of the old-time pool players. If you eliminate this clientele, your beloved pool hall will be out of business in no time.
