Kim barred from Taiwan?

I just read in the current Billiards Digest that Ga Young Kim has been "barred indefinitely from tournaments in Taiwan after an incident at the 2006 Asian Games." The article said that details were not available, but that "Kim explained that a rift occurred when she was acting as translator for Korean players at the event."

Does anyone (Colin?) know anything about this?

....She went to Oncue in San Diego the last few night....They say maybe she is gonna move here.

I really don't think she would have much of a problem finding someone to bunk with anywhere. Johnnyt

I don't believe GYK is banned, but she is definitely as welcome as before. GYK played the Womens' version of the WPC just recently in Taiwan.

When I was at the WPC I got the skinny on this issue. The press felt that G Young was being uncomplimentary to the Taiwanese team when they played Korean players. They felt that she cheered the Koreans and jeered the Taiwanese.

As a result the Taipei Billiard Association banned her from competing in Taiwanese events. She is however still quite loved by the crowds there.

It is felt by some that this move was to prevent her, a Korean who grew up in Taipei, from dominating the Taiwan women's billiard scene over purely Taiwanese players.

Basically Ga Young is banned for supporting her team and country. Not too cool for a country that brags about taking on all comers.

Ga Young played the WPC because she couldn't be barred from that one.

i'm still confused here. my take on what happened:

1) gyk is translator
2) something to do with a foul
3) gyk is banned

i'm missing alot here.

I strongly believe that the TBA is being too unreasonable here. what they consider as a belief of supporting your own kinsmen as a crime is highly unjustified or uncalled for. a simple suspension would be considered harsh, but an indefinite ban is just too much of a punishment for a simple gesture of goodwill towards his fellow kins (the koreans). I believe that KIM displayed a sense of impartiality and fair judgement on both sides. Would it be better for those people who were instrumental in GYK's banning to simply shut her mouth up whenever a taiwanese player fouls and the ref doesn't saw it? this kind of nationalistic ideology which tolerate dishonesty in a sport is more of a sickening sight and is more of an uncalled display of behavior and unsportsmanship.

The Korean Team was loudly cheering their teammates and perhaps applauding mistakes by the Taiwanese. Ga Young was being in the team spirit when congratulating the good play by her countrymen but not applauding the mistakes by the Taiwanese. She was the translator for a controversial foul dispute but was nothing less than professional in trying to mediate the issue.

As a result she was lumped in with what was deemed poor sportsmanship by the Taiwanese press and prosecuted in the media.

Thus the Taiwanese caved in and barred her from their organized competitions.

It's too bad that they would cut her off from billiards in Taiwan where she grew up and learned to play.

I think this is also a blessing in disguise for GYK, John. this would give her a lot more exposure in the international circuit and a very nice addition in the women's pro tour. GYK has the last laugh on this one. I wouldn't be surprised if the TBA would consider her as their own again once she dominates the U.S. circuit.

Kim's ban will be lifted several months later. Last month, she even appeared in the taiwan semi-pro tour (men) but was eliminated earily.

Thanks for all the info....what a shame that the Taiwanese government would take things so far! But hopefully Hail Mary Shot has it right and Ga Young will have the last laugh in the end.
