Lag Foul at the EC

This is how the referee placed the balls for the lag in the semi-final today:

Niels moved the ball into the table and lost the lag for that. Even though Joshua still wanted to lag. I remember that stupid rule from another tournament surprising someone. If they place the balls like this it's even more ridiculous.

you mean away from the rail?
what was the rule?

The rule all last year at the Predator events (run by the EU refs) was the ref places the lag ball, and the player's can't touch it afterwards. I assume its the same here.

its the rule and if you don't follow them because you don't agree with them you get punished.
and if you don't bother to learn the rules of that tournament you also get punished.
 
both do everything the same. or it looks professional. who knows.


its the rule. and you follow them in pool tournaments.

I don’t think it is a rule. I think it’s a strict interpretation of the rules. An interpretation incongruent with the traditions of the game. Because the WPA rules aren’t explicit a player can’t move the balls, but it’s also not explicit they can. It is just descriptive of the process for setting up the lag (“the referee will position the balls on either side of the table”) and from that they extrapolated this interpretation.

I think it's a silly rule, but since the rule specified that the ref will place the balls, and does not mention the players placing balls, I can agree with the ref's interpretation. I think the wisdom of the rule is dubious, but the wording doesn't support the players moving the balls. Assuming the rule writer was not clueless, if they wanted the players to place the balls, they wouldn't have specified that the ref places the balls.
 
if the rule stinks which it certainly might, you have to fight to get it changed. if it is only a minor issue let it go and move on.

its just that in the u.s. and canada it has always been that ball in hand was for the lag. now it is getting changed. just like the color of the balls. and object ball fouls, making a ball on the break in one pocket, ball in hand in nine ball for fouls, special racks for nine ball which make knowing which ball is going in on the break, etc, etc,.
old people dont like changes whether for the better or worse.

and for good reason as it changes the game as we know it.

What would have happened if after the foul being called on Niels, and Joshua wanting to lag anyway, if Joshua had then also moved his own ball? Double foul? Does that mean they re-lag?

The refs are obviously not pool players which by my thoughts makes them poor refs.
 
What's next on the hit parade?? Chalking rules???? " You can only use three chalking strokes per shot" or some other lame nitty bullshit.

No. The refs would have said the first offender determined the outcome. And if Josh refused to accept the ruling and tried to force the lag, the ref would turn around and slap him with an unsportsmanlike. And since that would be undermining a ruling, it would likely be a loss of game penalty.
