Laminated tips

Well I am not too impressed. I am on my third laminated tip on one shaft in the last 3 months. First a Talisman Water Buffalo, then a Hercules, and now another Hercules. All de-lam'd after about 30-45 days of play. I play every day, but I dont break with this tip, they broke apart due to normal play. I can tell the current Hercules I have on my cue is starting to de-lam again becasue I can hear a slight click when I hit the cue. I keep my cues indoors, dont get them wet, take great care of them, etc. And no it isnt because it rains all the time here in Seattle. What the hell??!!

How many of you have had this problem with Laminated tips from any manufacturer? From my perspective , I am thinking if this happened to me three times in almost as many months there must be an issue here. How many tips have ever de-laminated on you???

Talisman and Hercules mediums delaminated on me.
Everest and Sniper have not.
I love the Everest tip.
No more Talisman or Hercules for me.
Now, when the Mooris become available for $10 or less, I'd get them too.

All who've complained failed to state how they themselves shape and maintain their tip.

Lots of mileage!

Great point!

I've been using Talisman Waterbuffalo hard tips on my Dishaw for about a year now and have not experienced any of the above mentioned problems. I keep a dime radius and very rarely need to reshape the tip. If needed I use the Tip-Pick to help the chalk stay on but that is very rare.

I play just about every day and don't break with the cue mainly due to the Ivory ferrules.

The tip was originally shaped on my buddy's lathe with a jig, and I ocassionally use a scruffing cube. That's it. Once it was shaped I havent had to perform any maintenance other than scruffing which all tips should be able to hold up to.

The damn things just became unglued. It wasn't due to any mishandling on my part.

A Moori by any other name is not the same.
Well Ted, If I ever try one again I'll try a Moori at your recommendation, but I think for now it will be back to a solid tip since I have some good old one-piece Triangles out in the garage.

As far as play is concerned, I didnt really notice anything about the tip that enhanced my abilities. Laminated tips seem to deliver a consistant hit, but so do many single layered tips I have used. I either hit the ball with good draw or didn't... the tip didnt seem to change anything. I dont see what the big deal is.

To any pro's reading this, I'd like to hear your opinion about the differences in play you have observed between single and multi-layered tips, pros and cons.

Thanks,
Ryley

Blud, Thanks for the offer, and please include some the next time you ship something to me. Hang in there this week Partner.

Has anyone who has complained used any liquid for burnishing their laminated tip? If so, which liquid?

Three of the five talisman tips I have put on have lost chunks out of them, one guy was breaking and the other two were just playing with theirs .I don'w know where but he ordered them and bought them to me and said put these on, so I did and with in a month 3 of them were ruined, the other two are fine. I have managed to talk everyone out of laminated tips so far. B

Well, then, the shoe polish may have been the kiss of death leading to delamination. The Talisman website counsels against using liquids for burnishing.

KoKoMyBro- what kind of shoe polish do you use my friend?? I used Kiwi, which is far from a liquid. That shouldn't have led to this problem. I dont think there is any defense for a tip that sucks!

Also, I have found that the laminate adhesive becomes softened during burnishing which may lead to de-lamination. I therefore am extremely careful and have NOT had a Talisman de-laminate on either my cues or any of my cusstomer's cues in over two (2) years.

Talisman Tips

I have had three split on my customers. One because the guy Tip Picked it to death, one because the guy insists on 11mm shafts, and one water buffalo on a break. Now that's out of 100. The two I can explain, the one, a bad tip.
Don

KingCarom:

The shoe polish may contain a chemical that acts like a solvent: it dissolves the adhesive.

G'wan, put a plastique bag over thine head and inhale its waxy goodness. And report back to us asap! 8P
