landon shuffet vs earl strickland ...unwatchable

The sport can't be presented in its beautiful natural form while being exciting enough to cater to the short attention span of the general public. It is an either or situation & no amount of money or some new "idea" will change that.

To say the sport can't be presented in it's beautiful natural form, while also being exciting to people in 2014, is complete hogwash.

Short attention spans? lol. Is that what 2014 is calling laziness?

Think what you like but the facts are there to show you are wrong. The game has next to no money in it as only a select few even make money at it. For the small minority that did make money, it is not much compared to other athletes.

PPV buys are in the toilet especially when you would try to promote your sport as growing to a TV network.

I could go on but get out of the dream world & realize pool will never be popular amongst the masses again as many other options exist for the attention & dollars of people.

Again, hogwash, to say anything could not be popular again is ridiculous.

Is that all you have, hogwash? Yes, that sure will get the sport back to the masses.

People sometimes have to accept reality & realize when the jig is up. Horse Racing is a great example of a sport that used to be dominant as it was the "Sport Of Kings".

Unfortunately more options became available for the attention & dollars of its patrons. So it went from the top to being an afterthought to those outside of its hardcore base. Most tracks only survive because of alternatives such as casinos & video lottery terminals.

Some will quickly say that money will solve the issue for pool. However back to the horse racing example, purses exploded at many tracks due to the casino revenue yet the stands are still mostly empty outside of its core base.

Money is not the cure all for the sport (it will help but not to the miracle that many expect).

How many decades have passed since pool was considered an elite sport? It has been quite a number.

That is really all I need, considering the statements I am debating against.

And yes, to think billiards can't be popular again is completely wrong and comical to me.

I assumed you had no logic or facts to bring up & I was absolutely correct. Keep thinking it will have a miraculous comeback. ;)

No, never said a miraculous comeback. It takes effort and the correct business decisions. But it can come back.

And it should start with a professionally run governing body that big business (sponsors) could in the future work together with in a trusting business relationship.
Until that point, and some others, pro pool will never have a lasting
big business sponsorship.

Another part of it is having more people like SVB, that dedicates a lot of time to the youth of pool. Getting them more interested in the game etc... Everyone here started somewhere.

Where is your logic and facts that it can never make a come back? Speaking in absolutes like you have been to the future makes you look silly. Who knows what the future holds.. not me or you. It will certainly take a lot of work. I don't think anyone believes that it's the next nfl but with all the people playing it could get to where bowling was at one time. Anything would be an improvement :)

I look at the reality of how society is. The attention spans of people are not there for a game as intricate as pool. I am not happy that this is the case but it is a reality.

Yes, plenty of people play pool but they do it for the entertainment aspect of something to do with their friends versus because the game is cool or popular. This won't sell to a network in an age where they do not have problems filling airtime with so much material at their disposal.

Then we have to adjust. We made that adjustment from straight pool to 9 ball. What's the next move? That I don't know ...

Was this a live stream somewhere? From the OP it was difficult to comprehend what exactly was happening.

Im confused.

Landon handles himself like a true champion. If you want to watch Jerry Springer, watch Jerry Springer.

Earl Strickland was once a real champion. A credit to the sport and to himself. Watch the battles between Earl and Efren and you can see what I real champion he really was. He dominated the US Open.

Earl, now, does nothing but make a distraction and embarrasses the sport and himself. THAT is truly sad.

If you think that the Landon/Strickland match is unwatchable, you must not understand pool.

To me, watching Earl's obvious mental illness is sad and unwatchable.

I wish you the best of rolls,

Ken

Spot on Ken. having players dance around or be disrespectful is not what will make it large for audiences. Our closest comparison would be darts and look how espcially in the UK they have turned it into a greta live spectacle and has grown to wider audiences. Earl is a disgrace full time, like someone else said Steve Davis was adored like Hendry worldwide for being so calm and gracious. Watch a a darts match from the premier league and see how they have promoted it, thats what would be the change not having disgruntled idiots like Earl as the poster child.

It is not society now. That's, as I said, ridiculous. Lazy as compared to past generations? Yes. Short attention spans? No. You just have to do something to grab that attention. Colorful people helps in that somewhat.

Look at the modern day payouts of snooker in England.
Chess has tournaments where 1st place is over 150K US and more. Those are also what you would call "intricate" games.

The money that pool could have has nothing to do with a social break down, short attention spans etc... Will every single person ever like pool? Absolutely not. Not everyone likes golf, football, baseball, soccer etc... But they just do better at attracting more people, in various ways. Some of it is advertising, some of it having colorful players, but the majority of it starts at an early age with having many locally run organizations where kids can play all of those sports and further an interest in it.

Pool is on a large rise in China, it is king in the Philippines, but it is televised more often, it is played on more of a family oriented level, instead of just the bars; and they are doing a much better job showing the younger generations the game.

WOW. Finally saw the match on utube. It was awesome. And I like Earl, but I also like good pool, and this kid has it.

I even liked when the kid said to Earl "I don't care what you do"... too funny.

Imagine being 18 and playing a 6 time world champion and smoking him on a 10 foot table... how cool was that :)

Oh, next time someone complains about me playing slow, I'm just gonna say I play at the same pace as pro's, even ones that beat world champions !!!!!!!
