Larger V-Groove Bit

I like the v-groove bits that cut when my router is in the vertical position but can't find a very big one. Mine will only cut like 5/8. Does any one know where I can get a larger 90 degree bit that will fit in a router? I don't have a milling machine.

a lot depends on the shank size

I also prefer to use my router vertically, but the largest bits have much bigger shanks, some require a mill. There are several available for a 1/2 inch shank size, and they get a bit heavy, so maybe a soft start router is best to gently get the rpms up? many are avilable with 3/4 inch and wider cutting heads, and all 1/2 inch shanks. And of course really wide cuts can be had with shaper heads run on a mill arbor.
It seems reasonable that there are limits in cutter size when the shank is 1/4 inch. Even a slight pitch buildup can cause an imbalance and problems at high rpm with a smaller whippy shank.
I know you did not mention that you want to use 1/4 inch shank, but that seems the most common size used by fellow cue builders.

I use a shaper cutter mounted on a 1/2" shaft with a bushing in a mill but a 1/2 " router could be substituted if a lower speed is used. http://www.grizzly.com/products/c2087

I might have to try that but I'd have to build a new mount for a different router. I have one of the porter cables with a mount that only it will fit on. I do have a speed control for the router so that's no problem.

If you go to brianna products , Lee has a system for v-grooves that is very nice and cuts super wide and very sharp. Runs like 80 bucks but does a nice job. It is made just like the one you posted , but muck wider, and comes with the bit to cut out the point stock also.
Hope this helps.

Unless it is one of the little laminate trimmers, you should be able to get a 1/2" collet for any porter cable router. You said it has a speed control, and I don't know of any PC brand laminate trimmers that are variable speed, so my guess is that one of these would work- http://www.tylertool.com/por4212routc.html

Yes it's a PC laminate trimmer. I just plug it into a separate speed control, it's not built in.

I'd just like to be able to get my points a little wider at the base so there isn't such a gap on a 4 pointer. You can see from the link below what I mean.
If your "A" joint is 1" diameter, You would have to go less than 1/2" deep. 1/2" deep would be .7" wide. How big is your blank, before you cut the "V" grooves? If your blank is too much over sized, then getting near the center with the groove would be harder.

So will that bit cut an inch wide or am I reading that wrong? Thanks for the replies fellas.
Yes. Like Mike Webb said above, I have used these bits to cut so the points touch at the bottom on a blank that is 1.15" or so. That doesn't leave much "meat" in the middle though! :p
