Hey, I too competed in the ACUI regionals (region 8) this past weekend. I won.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about nationals. I know they are in Michigan this year in June but that is it. Whats the competition like? What do you get for winning? How many people play? Is there more than just nineball? Thanks for any info you could provide.
The following is from the organizer of the region 9 qualifier (which Lars won):

The ACUI 9-Ball Championships, will be held
at The University of Michigan on the weekend of June 17, 2005.
For the first time in history, the ACUI Collegiate Championships will
be held jointly with the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Junior
Nationals. ACUI contestants will have new opportunities to meet with
BCA officials, industry sponsors and vendors, celebrity keynote
speakers, and their under-18 compatriots. We are even planning to have
mini-tournaments between college players and junior players for a fun
change of pace during the weekend.
There are several changes to this year's ACUI Championships.
Here is a brief synopsis:
> There is a $100 registration fee for all ACUI participants. Regions
are strongly encouraged, but not required, to pay this as the prize for
their winners. Likewise, schools are strongly encouraged to support
their students by paying a portion of their costs. Students sign a form
to acknowledge that the registration fee, travel and lodging costs, and
incidental expenses are ultimately their responsibility.
> Students have the opportunity to qualify at any ACUI Regional
Recreation Tournament, but they can also qualify by attending any
non-regional qualifier. Any school or independent billiards
establishment may request to hold a qualifier during the season (anytime
between September 1 - March 31). Currently, there is just one
non-regional qualifier on the schedule: The U of M Team Invitational at
The University of Michigan, March 11-13, 2005. This tournament is open
to teams or individuals from all schools in the country. The top male
and top female in the Sunday 9-ball competition will be invited to the
ACUI Championships. For more information:
www.umich.edu/~billiard/invitational.html.
> All 1st-place winners will be invited to the Championships
automatically and given 1-2 weeks during which to accept and pay their
registration fee. After completion of all ACUI Regional and
non-regional qualifiers, 2nd-place finishers will be contacted and
invited as well, with the ultimate goal being a full field of 32 men and
32 women. All finishers in all ACUI Regionals will be given equal
opportunity to attend the Championships, even if it means more than 32
players in each division. For example, we would never invite the
3rd-place finisher from Region 4 without contacting the 3rd-place
finisher from ALL regions and offering them the same opportunity.
> Lodging is not provided for participants in the tournaments. Once
all participants are signed up and registered for the tournaments, I
will work closely with each of them to suggest room pairings so that
they can save money. BCA and ACUI have blocked rooms at three local
hotels to accommodate the 300+ participants and family members that we
expect for the tournaments. Prices are not finalized, but I will convey
that information to participants as soon as it is available to me.
> At least two meals are provided for the contestants, including a
sit-down dinner and opening banquet on Friday, June 17. This will be a
joint session of all BCA and ACUI contestants, wherein keynote speakers
will address the crowd, and other industry representatives will take the
podium. Competition for ACUI contestants will begin either Friday night
or Saturday morning, depending on the total number of entries.
> I have begun negotiating with the head photographer for
azbilliards.com (she covers all major professional tournaments), and she
sounds thrilled to be here to cover this event. Other sponsorships and
media coverage from Inside Pool, Accu-stats videos, and a number of cue
and cue accessory manufacturers are also underway. All participants
should take home a very nice prize package.
> Pending approval by the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) is the
establishing of scholarships for the 1st- and 2nd-place finishers in the
ACUI Championships. Currently under discussion by the BEF are:
1st place $1000
2nd place $500
(in each division)
I hope this answers your questions. I have an e-mail to Betsy inquiring as to whether there are any other non-regional qualifiers besides the one she has scheduled at her school. I will let you know as soon as I get a reply. Please share this information with your players.
