Laser rpm tachometer - wow!

Hi,

I just purchased a hand held Laser Beam RPM Tach and right out the the box it has made a very significant impact on the quality control of my products.

I tested some lead screw feeds and lathe RPM on both my shaft and butt saw machines and within 1/2 hour my finish cut were coming of the machine with a shine as the saw blades were actually burnishing the wood. Unbelievable! The Juma and Black Phenolic butt caps, joint collars, and pre installed ferrules on my shafts also looked like they were sanded right off the machine.

I was getting what I thought was as perfect of an end product beyond my expectations. My goal was to get no swirl lines, chatter, or facets on my saw finishes. My extrapolation of the rpm and linear travel gave me an end product that I thought was as good as it gets. The only sanding I had to do was to clean up some hair like grain raise.

Now with the Laser device I can dial in the numbers to 1 RPM accuracy using my trimmer pots on the DC motor controllers.

I will be doing some very exacting calculations this week and will chart and post optimum speeds and feeds for:

Hogging initial tapers
Intermediate taper sizing
Final taper sizing

Because the piece in the lathe changes in dia. as you go towards final cut, the speed of the rotational linear geometry changes, thus the need for slight rpm and feed changes for perfection.

If you are looking to improve the tapering finish of your items, you have to go off for the $ 30.00 and buy one of the units.

I have also experimented with RPM speeds on my wood lathe while applying my epoxy substrate coats and have eliminated almost all of my slight swirl lines. This reduced my sanding time in half because the swirls represented the high spots that had to be leveled.

Hi Dick,

I noticed your is a different brand but I also bought mine on ebay and it was way lower than 30.00. I buy so much stuff every week my memory escaped me on the price.

Thanks for the point of clarification on the price.

Have you seen the same results on your saw machine?

I haven't used it on any equipment as of yet.

Dick,

I will be posting my rpm and feeds speeds tonight. I hope it will be helpful to others here.

After performing my last pass, I keep my same dial indicator elevation and run one more pass and the shafts are actually coming off with a shine on the finish.

What are you using as a standard to measure the RPM readout against? I have one and yes, it's great, but I have always wondered if 300 rpm was 300 or 301 or 250 or 350 or what? I have no other way to measure the rpm on my lathe.

Or is it simply that you can get a repeatable number with them?

Just wondering.

Gary,

Lathe speed rpm and lead screw rpm. I am trusting the technology of the laser unit. As long as it is repeatable is all I am after. At the speeds we are dealing with I can be off 1 RPM here or there.

I am going to calculate the IPM on my travel and post a chart tonight so that anyone who does not have vernier control and is using a pulley or gear system can figure out there own calculations.

I have had one for quite some time now and have used it for my linear controlled
spinning lathe under my Gantry.
Was also shocked to see how far off the large primary lathe was w.r.t RPMs on certain gear
combos :shocked2:

Have not had the time to play to much with the thingy but it's a nice tool to own.
