I had nearsightedness of about -6 in both eyes. After the operation in 1999 some nearsightedness came back. The doctor explained that this was normal - the surgeon "overcorrects", knowing that the eyes will backslide to some extent. I backslid more than usual. I'm talking about lasik for myopia circa 1999 - it may be different for astigmatism, and it may be different today. But I would believe him about your vision changing - mine certainly did.
Anyway, the deal with the doctor was unlimited followup surgeries as needed for a year, and he did both eyes a second time. I again backslid enough in one eye to have a third surgery on it. So all in all I had it done three times - no charge for the second and third. The doctor had a standard on whether he would do a followup surgery. I'm not positive what it was, but I think it was about 20/40 or worse.
My eyes stopped changing after the third surgery - at least they didn't change much. I'm still a little nearsighted - probably 20/25 or 20/30 using both eyes. As my doctor explained, at my age (now 59) it's better to be a little nearsighted than a little farsighted because the eyes lose the ability to focus on close objects (why we all need reading glasses eventually), and you don't want close objects to be blurry. For example, if you're farsighted at my age, the instrument panel of your car will look blurry. Being a little nearsighted helps. As far as pool is concerned, you don't need eagle eyes to make long shots. We're talking only 9 feet away, and being a little nearsighted like me is no impediment. I'm glad I had the operation(s). I seldom wear glasses when driving, where good vision is more important than in pool, but at night in strange territory I sometimes do put them on.
As far as your case is concerned, don't be afraid to ask your doctor lots of questions, and also do some internet research on your own if you don't trust all that he is telling you. It's true they don't want to do follow up operations for a very minor problem, but I think the main reason is that there still is some risk involved in the operation (or at least that's an important factor).
