Lasik

Thanks for the clarification on lasek/lasik. Have either of you experienced dry eyes since you've had the procedure?

For the first month or so after the procedure I did have dry eyes and used drops once or twice a day. After those first couple of months I don't use drops at all and do not have dry eyes.

Twenty years ago, I went to lasik consult with two goals -- pool vision and shooting a rifle with iron sights. I was told that lasik would not improve either. Never sought a second opinion.
Here's your second opinion. They were wrong! Lasik works to improve your vision for whatever you care to do, from driving to playing sports. Good vision is an imperative for a healthy lifestyle. Yes, it is most certainly elective surgery, but why not elect to have a better quality of life.

I had both my eyes done 20 years ago and I still enjoy perfect vision in my left eye. My right eye has cataracts and I will probably need a lens replacement. My eye doctor told me I will then have perfect vision for the rest of my life. This is not hard choice to make.

Who's had it done? Pros? Cons? Horror stories?

Mine was in 1998. The experience was generally good and I'm glad I did it. I had dry eyes before the procedure, and having it didn't help.

I had exceptionally bad vision. The two people that went before me were talking about how long their laser treatments were going to be - 11 seconds for one, 14 seconds for the other. I looked at my chart - 60 seconds for one eye, 64 seconds for the other. Yikes.

I can look around the room right now and read everything in it, even 23 years after the fact. I use glasses for night driving and for movies to make everything super sharp, but otherwise they stay in the drawer. No reading glasses required yet, knock on wood, and pushing 60.

The laser they used on my eyes had a beam the size of a pencil eraser. Now it's a millimeter wide and is a much more sophisticated procedure.
