Ok, I am short of players for the Johnny Archer pool school in the Phoenix area. I know we have a great pool and billiards community here and so I am a not sure why we are short of people. We fill classes everywhere we go except in my home town.
If anyone can just let me know what would stop you from signing up for this 4 hour class wit hthe #1 player in the USA at $200.00 I would like to know. I am always ready to learn and fix any of the things I may be doing wrong and so your opinions and advice is more than welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Mark,

You are not doing anything wrong in my opinion. The only reason I can't go is I don't have the $200 to spend on that right now. I live check to check and only have so much money for things other than bills. I think what you are doing is awesome and wish like hell I could do it. Maybe I can get a sponsors exemption :)

Since it is you I will give you a sponsors excemption. I will even let you in as a sponsor for the low price of $200.00. So send me $200 and you will be a sponsor and will get into the school at zero charge. Sound good?

Mark - If you have some information about what is offered, I can post it up on www.azpoolscene.com and see if you get any bites.

What is the date you are looking for?

Also, I'm in the same boat at BVal, but if I could be there to cover the story for azpoolscene.com that would be great. Let me know.....

One Word Mark.

ECONOMY.

Many people in Arizona are hurting because of the economy. It not just Arizona it Global, people who had factory jobs in CHINA are getting laid off it is a Global recession.

Look at our own AZB Wanted/For Sale Section, and look at what is For Sale, and NO SELLING like it did 12 months ago!

Here's an idea to increase attendance. In addition to 4 hours with Johnny, you could give the students a few additional hours of bonus training on hustling moves, like that gem you just pulled there. I'd pay $200 for that and the sponsorship. What a value.

Crap, AGAIN?? I got to speak to a tech about this, No wonder I can't get no action around here :)

I posted it up on the Arizona Forums. How long will everyone be in town and what are the other possible dates?

I might have to go and make an extra $200 at a pool room tonight to be able to attend.

The 10th and the 11th of Feb. Thsi would mean getting off work for some also so that never helps. But whoever wins on the 7th & 8th we will just make sure that we live stream in on the 10th or the 11th. It will just be Johnny out in PHX. Oh and me :)

Thanks in advance,
Mark,

I've been to a few events like this is the past...not with JA, but others. I'd be reluctant to do it again and here are reasons why.

1. It wasn't really a "pool school". It was 4 hours of some exhibition to players at all different levels of the game and a lot of story telling. IMHO, if you want to tell stories, write a book.

2. It doesn't matter whether if you're #1, it's a matter of what you can teach ME in the time we're together. Pull 10- guys around a table for 4 hours and after intros, BS, and old cronies telling stories and you're getting a couple of hours max...and maybe 5 minutes of 1-on-1 time. That's a hefty price to pay so he better be really good at teaching something everyday useful, very quickly.

3. In my experience, most really good players have but one way to impart information...the way they know it. Problem is, people learn differently and when the players get questions they act like they're being challenged and get an attitude. Instructors have to take these questions as opportunities to come up with new ways of explaining things. There's a big difference between being a teacher and being a player...truth is, most "players" can't conceptualize the problems the rest of the world has because they're simply too far past it. To quote an old friend who has been a road player for years when I asked him when was the last time he actually "thought" about making the shot (he was always focused on position) and he replied "Y'know, it's been so long I don't even remember".

4. IMHO, you need a formal curriculum so people know what value they are dropping $200 for. A simple goals and objectives list...and stick to it. This promotes the concept of "professional instruction" and not simply "let's see who shows up and what they want to learn".

5. Of course the #1 reason people aren't dropping cash for things like this is the economy. That means you need to market to a group with more disposable income than your average shortstop on down. It's simply a value proposition...will this $200 make me make at least $200 back?

I can understand your position on this. There are a couple of things in there that I know DON'T happen in our schools but I know you wern't talking about our schoo.ls as you said.
Some of the experience is getting an insight as to how a top Pro thinks and how he goes about playing in a match. This is not about mechanics as you probably know. You are right though when you have a group of 10 people do have questions, some are there to hear a story about the 2000 US Open etc and that is tough to fend off because thats what they paid to get. Maybe the others didn't pay for that maybe they paid to learn how to break like a pro everyone usually has something they are there for.
So as far as a set game plan there are some very simple mechanics that Johnny usually looks at, this is for two reasons a) to see if there is anything there that he thinks each student may need help with and b) to evaluate what speed that student plays. He does try to customize the the lessons to each persons needs and wants and apply that to the rest of the time they spend together. So as much as I agree with you on having a set game plan it is also tough to get done with all different needs and differnt speeds of play.
I think the goal is for you to come out of the school with one or two things that will improve your game. You are also correct in the fact that the economy is not helping with things either.
So to end, I agree with alot of what you are saying and can understand why you would be hesitant from your past experiences. I can also se that this is what other people thing will happen. Thank you for the input although I'm not sure right now how much can be changed as we will always have the same issues with students from time to time who want to ask certain questions etc. It is a tough one I am not sure if the BCA instructors have some of the same problems but peopel seem to have alot of questions for the top pros. Thanks again I will take the info and try to use it.
