This guy has been coming to my poolhall and playing alot of money games. He likes to bet decent amounts, but he will not play me any game except last-pocket 8 ball, and he wants 1 game to 5 for $100. I am a better player than this guy, but I really don't know this game very well, and I don't know one-pocket either. Does anyone have any strategies for this game before I play the guy? Strategies for end-game would be very helpful too. Thanks

Does he play ball in hand? Find out his rules first.
The first time I played it I beat a decent player.
One game I've played that helps all my games
is "call your next shot 8 ball." In other words,
call the ball you intend on making AFTER you
shoot your upcoming shot.Really makes you
think about position.

Does Calling all shots count?

One time (way back when) Buddy Hall was playing a $ game with a local (sucker) and Buddy was always shooting at the 9 because he knew he would get other shots even if he missed. The guy becomes totally convinced that Buddy is "All Luck". After being stuck pretty good, he tells Buddy that he will raise the bet (to $100) and keep playing if Buddy calls the pocket for the next ball in advance.
Buddy says - "Hell, if you will play for $200, I'll call EVERY balls pocket right after the break"!
He didn't think ANYONE could do that - and it cost him dearly!

If you can get a copy of The 8-Ball Bible, it contains quite a bit of strategy on last pocket 8-ball.

The Main Strategy

Fiest - Never have the side pocket as the last pocket!
Second - Never make the last 2 (stripes/solids) unless you have a good plan & pattern to run out!
Third - Be a good banker & 1 hole player!

An even better 8 ball game is Alabama. When the first ball is made, it determines which side pocket that each player must make either their 15 ball or 1 ball in. When played by good players, it makes the game almost as complex as 1 pocket.

Last Two, what is this guys name? Is he a Mexican guy named Martin? If so I've played him last pocket and he's actually pretty tough at that game, I've seem him beat some pretty strong players playing that game, he doesn't book too many losers from what I've seen. The best tip I can give you for that game is to not try and run out every time you go to the table, last pocket is all about missing at the right time.
