Lathe Chuck

Thank you for the detailed reply. It seems that while collect chucks have their place they are probably not what I need/want in this instance. One thing I may not have mentioned is that I intend to use this as a through chuck on a dovetail bed. This way when I am finished working on a tip or ferrule I can open the chuck jaws, slide the tailstock live center up to the shaft and then slide the chuck back and forth to allow access to the entire shaft for cleaning or whatever. One setup, no remounting of the workpiece, chuck, cross slide or tailstock.

Again, thanks for all of the information.

Well, now that we know what you really want...:)

either a steady rest or a bearing block, with a bearing, and some
Delrin bushings(for various shaft diameters) should handle everything
you need.

Thanks, Dale. This is the setup I currently have (bearing block) and with a couple of exceptions works O.K. Like iusedtoberich my workholding collets have a shoulder on one end (no id taper though) and with the tailstock, cross slide and bearing block in place there isn't enough room at the end of my lathe bed to get the collet out without dismounting some tool, which is something I want to avoid.

Probabaly the biggest problem is that more times than not the ferrule diameter is larger than the shaft diameter which means a collet big enough to fit the ferrule is sloppy on the shaft unless I go further up the shaft to secure it. I have found that the closer to the chuck I can get the ferrule the less problems I have with deflection of the workpiece, out of round workpieces and overall accuracy of the job.

I have an email in to Unique and if they get back to me and the price is livable and I do not find an internal jaw chuck elsewhere that is probabaly the way I will go. Else I will just use an external jaw chuck and mount a guard as suggested by poolcuemaster.

Thank you for your replies and suggestions.

Regards,
Stoney
