Hi everyone. I am a new cue maker here in Scotland and im after a lathe.
I need the lathe to do Joint work on 3/4 cues and also base joints on 1 piece cues(drilling Up the end of cues)
Would need a bore big enough for 30mm, if thats not possible then a lathe with mt3 bore and 20" bed.
I need the lathe to be no more than 100kg(as its going in attic) and it would be easier if i could buy in UK or Europe.
I would prefer a small bed lathe with large spindle bore.
Please, Please help as i need a lathe asap.

Think your demands is though to fulfill. As far as I'm aware, there is no dedicated cue lathe manufacturer around in our end of the world so we're stuck with either mod'ing a stock metal lathe or ordering something from the US.
I have gone for the first option.

I am sure that you can find a good size metal lathe that will meet your needs but not 100 kg or less. All the lathes that I have seen weigh 5 to 10 times that amount.

Try a Hightower lathe. It does it all and weighs about 50 kg. I am sure he would ship one to you.

Chris has a nice set of tools but for us over here it costs $ to have it $hiped. I'm using larger machinery for most of my operations but I'm currently looking in to a "almost ready to go " lathe to do repairs and some cue building operations. $hipping is a factor which kills us over here - so yes - I do understand your question....
I'm sure if you search up here you would find the most desirable manufacturers which could help you - no names mentioned. A side note - ask the manufacturer if there would be upgrades during for instance 2012.

Hightower lathe or something like it is what your requirements seem to be.He'll probably ship it to you and follow up in case you have problems.

I suggest if you're going to do more than just repair or if you want to actually build cues that you find a better location. You'll want a large metal lathe amongst other things.
Good Luck

If you take the cost of shipping a Cue Lathe from North America as opposed
to buying a lathe in the UK and the cost of modifying it to suit your needs, repairing and eventually building, what do you think.

If it is going in your attic, that pretty much rules out a full sized lathe.
I would get a hold of Chris, Todd, Bassel, you know, have a look at what they have to offer and what you need to suit your requirements now and in the near future.

Also consider that eventually you will want to try your hand at building.

Check DHL and get a round about shipping figure from the USA to Glasgow. 50 KG. For example, you would get a couple or three boxes from Chris for the Deluxe. Plus supplies for starting you off.

Also consider where you will be buying your cue supplies from. I would think you would want to make large orders
to cut down on shipping costs and waiting time. I mean, you probably wouldn't want to be making small orders every week or month.

How about exotic wood suppliers?

Aye Laddie, I think you'll also want to be turning some drones, chanters and blow pipes for those musical instruments
you guys play over there.

Anyway, don't let a few extra dollars in shipping deter you from doing what you want. Its a one time expense for the lathe.
Glasgow is a big city. If you have a line on doing repair work, you can probably make that back in short order.

If you are new to this game, also consider buying Chris's book and DVDs and Joe Baringers DVDs.

I have Stewart blood and I believe that you will find another cue maker by the name of KJ that also shares some Scottish heritage.

Good luck in your venture.
Terry.

If you live in the city of the largest airport in your country a Deluxe Cue Smith could be crated and shipped Atlanta Airport to the largest airport there for around $600 fully assembled. To your door would cost more. If you want a shipping quote send me your info and what it is you want to order. Door to door by UPS would probably be around a $1000 as best guess without having your address. And about half that for a Mid Size. I sent a Deluxe plus a Mid Size and a box of wood to Switzerland yesterday and it was around $1485 for all that. The Mid Size does have the large 35mm bore option and shorter bed at 48" inch instead of the 70" deluxe length.

Not half bad when you consider shipping for mine was $250 to the middle of Canada. Several boxes plus a bit of added weight with supplies.
Could be alot more.
