Lathe Parts Help

I don't know much about wood lathes, and don't even own one. The owner of the pool hall I play at asked me to help him find a few replacement parts for his lathe. He offers free cue cleaning and tip replacement to league members so who am I to say no.

He has an old Ohio Forge 12" Pro Series Wood Lathe #510-548. From what I have found on the web, it is from the 80's, and parts are basically non existent from my searches, unless someone on here can point me in the right direction.

What he is looking to replace I believe is called a live tailstock. In the pictures below its parts 67-70. What I would like to know, is will any live tailstock do? Any recommendations on a good one? Also most of the ones I saw all have a point, the one he needs has to have a rounded out recessed tip for a cue tip to fit in. Any help is appreciated.

I believe what you are needing is called a live center or concave center. I dont know anything about the compatibility though....

Thank you, I actually just received a PM from another forum member who told me the same thing and gave me a little more info. Now that I am searching "live center" on Google, I am getting a lot more info on this. Seems there are live centers available from $20 to over $1000 out there. Need to go look at his to determine which size (MT) he needs, and find one with a concave point.

I hope you're patient:)

That is a clone of the infamous Craftsman(Sears) "tube" bed lathe.

It is overwhelmingly likely it uses a MT1 center. The concave part is
tricky. Fleabay will likely have 'live' centers with interchangeable points.

One of these points should be concave.

Two possiible issues:

1. If you can find a set with a concave center - it may, or may not,
be a good fit for cue tips.

2. The cost of a decent set may be about 2x what the lathe is worth.

IMHO - first determine why a new center is needed. Is the concave tip
worn? Is the bearing bad?

If you're lucky, it might just need to be cleaned.
If you are handy, or know someone who is, you might be able to
replace the bearing and/or point.

late breaking news direct from eBay

Item number: 360120661551 - buy it now $36

is a changeable MT live center, one of the points is concave, but it
doesn't look right for cue tips.

Sear sells the live center for that lathe in there stores. They used to be 14.95. Dale is correct about the concave part being hard to find however if you or any acquaintance has a lathe the concave part can easily be made out of delrin to fit on the Sears live center.

If he is missing part #70 he is in a world of hurt as that is the inside tailstock quill or spindle. If he only needs 67-69 then he needs a concaved live center #1 MT. I sell them for $45.

Actually, there is a guy on the bay who sells the entire tailstock
assembly for $20 or so.

He actually isn't missing anything, he just wants a spare. The one he is using is a replacement from a few years back. I will be seeing him tomorrow to make sure it is an MT1 and will more than likely give him your contact number from your web site so he talk to you directly. He will know more about it than I will, unless my few hours of research today has helped me surpass his level of lathe knowledge...

Thank you to everyone helping me out. Its members like you guys that make this forum as good as it is.

I bought one from You probably 12 years or or so ago, and It fit My old craftsman perfectly, and It worked very well back when I still used It.. I don't use that lathe anymore, and so It has been stored in an open garage for many years, and got pretty rusty. The concave is still in the tailstock, but It's probably a permanent fixture by now. The lathe has so much rust now that It's not really really worth Me trying to clean up. I only paid about $100 for It at the time, and that came with tools and cabinet/bench with ball bearing drawers, and some other stuff, so I definitely got My money back out of that purchase. It came with the long handled carbide chisels that were still for the most part unused, and I think I ended up selling for close to what I paid for the whole lathe.
