I think they got the idea from the modification you did to your finishing lathe a while back.

I started out with a converted treadle sewing machine and a wood rasp.

is there a cheap but viable solution to tip replacement on the cheap? looking at spend a couple hundred at most. replacing tips is all i would be doing for myself and friends as there arent really any nearby that are available reliably.

Buy a Mini Lathe. Look on Craigslist. Don't buy one of those crappy Shaft Masters on Ebay. At least with the Mini you can get most of your money back if you decide to sell later. Plus you can do other things with it.

You could also talk to Chris, Todd or Bassel about a low end lathe. You really just need a Bed, Headstock/motor/chuck and supports for the end of the shaft and for a razor blade to trim the tips. I think most of them will sell them to you one piece at a time. If you buy a bed, get it with a gear rack so you can add a carriage later if you decide to do other things with it.

For $55, it beats the heck outta the Cowboy lathe by a country mile.

Brent, I like the C clamp cruise control on your drill.
