League Advice??

LEAGUES SUCK PERIOD!!! All leagues are set up for the operator and the leagues to make all the money and at the players expense.....APA,BCA,VALLEY...ETC.Heres what you do play long enough to get qualified for state and national tourny's,play in the singles events only.thats the only way you will ever get any money out of them!

I have to disagree with you on this, League's are made for people to have fun with a hobby they like doing.

And with every league, they give back something, Add money to a purse, Draws for a free trip to the nationals for players to play.

Just think of the man hours that these league OPs have to commit to setting up and running these weekly events. Just doesn't magically happen, Even though some of us think it does.

If they make alittle money off my back, it is well worth it for the fun that I have.

Captain out of line - no character.

Your captain was way out of line. A captain is responsible for the "health" of his team. He MUST make sure that each player is comfortable and determined to play the best they can. This is not easy to do. On the other hand it is very easy to tear down a player and this affects the other team members. A captain must have character and maturity else the team can not perform at its best.

Here is what I do. Any player on my team can call for a break up of the team at any time. This player is automatically the captain on the new team. All other players can join the new team or stay with the old team. For a captain like this, he is usually left by himself or with players of his same character.

On the other hand a good captain will retain his players and the player calling for the break up is usually by himself being the captain of a team of one.

This keeps me in line and reminds me of my responsibilities to the team.

captain out of line

I'm surprised at this comment coming from you.
Typically you are very positive on all aspects of pool.
I agree that the APA for instance has evolved into a league that could promote bad pool playing.
Possibly due to the 23-point handicap restrictions for each team, excessive sandbagging, too much of a penalty for defensive shots, and players that are afraid to move up because there is always the threat of breaking up the team.
In most places leagues are what is keeping pool alive, and the rooms that don't have leagues are dying.
I wouldn't want to be a bar or room owner trying to rely on the tournament players and gamblers to make money.
The top players here in Denver either don't have any money or don't spend any money.
They go around and rob the local $10 bar tournaments, they collect their $120 by beating up on the regulars and never spend more than a buck or two on water or a Coke, and complain about that.
This is why Hank's Billiards here isn't having tournaments.
Hank loses money whenever he has a tournament, unless it is a league tournament.
During the last 10-ball tour event at Greenfields, very expensive for the owner, quite a few players, and the waitress had $200 in total sales.

Pool is all fun and games until your favorite place to play closes or changes into a BINGO parlor.
In this economy it's about survival, and most of the league players spend money when they go out.
The places that are making it are the places that have a lot of league action period.
I'm trying to form a triple-A BINGO team but nobody is interested.

This guy never said he was playing in the APA, he did however tell us he is in the tap league and goes back and forth from a 4 to a 5. It has nothing to do with the league he is playing in just the bad attitude his particular captain has.

good for the room owner

a lot of pool hall owners will not agree with you. my gf works in a pool hall and she said during the 12 team tri cup this weekend they made more in sales than they do in an entire month from the regulars. she also made more in tips those 2 days than she makes in 2 weeks .

let me clarify when i said 2 days. it was just 4 hours fri nite and 8 hours sat. thats a lot of money for just 12 hours playing time.

when i 1st started hanging out down there the owner would ask me to play him when bussiness was slow. when i tried to pay for .my time he said no charge since i was playing him. i told him he wasnt in bussiness to give free table time and paid the tab anyway.

he has several regulars that come in looking for action, if they dont find any they will play the owner a few hours and leave without paying most dont buy anything to drink either. i told him things like that going on is why he is closing the end of this month.

one more lost pool hall, its a damn shame he tried to rely on regulars and never got more league players or tournaments there.

he never did any advertising. i was going around during the tournament and telling people he did cue repair there. he was kept busy putting tips on and several people left cues to get cleaned or other things done.

You see, like many others that will actually think a little, how valuable having the league in a bar or room can be. Your new league operators in memphis have changed a lot of things in the last year and have made the locations into much more profitable business.

One poster made an excellent point about the number of hours and preperation required to pull of successful tournaments. Our league operator for instance spent over 50 hours at the city tournament location last weekend and over 35 this past weekend at the ladies event.

Another 40 hours again this weekend with the 9 ball cities.

After playing in many leagues over the years I for one do appreciate the time and effort it requires to not only handle the large numbers of teams and players on a daily basis but also to run the 20 to 30 special events we have each year.

I wouldnt quit just yet but if it happens again I will probably move on. Sometimes its more of a disappointment thing an people just loose common sense at these hot moments.

League is a very bad thing IMHO.

Stealing chalk is also a very bad thing.

You have to forgive CC for he plays in the Depends League at the seniors center. I think his team name is the Shufflers. They don't need time outs.
They just poop their pants as they shuffle around the table.

If you could read and comprehend what you are reading, you would of realized that I wasn't commenting on the issues the OP is dealing with in whatever league he mentioned.
My post was a quote commenting on the ridiculous statement made by cocobolo cowboy.
I didn't know that threads on this often wayward forum have to follow the
the true intent by the OP.
That would be a new revelation on AZ, but thanks for correcting me, I'll try to follow things better in the future.
My attention span is rather narrow, so let me know the next time I lack the proper focus to post on AZ Billiards.

I do stand corrected on the post your were replying too. I was still in the original thread and what he was saying. However I will respond on the incorrect comment that the APA could promote bad pool playing. That is ridiculous. I have seen some pretty shitty play in bca, tap, valley and the rest of the parasitic leagues that start up. You are 100% correct that without league play bars and pool rooms will close or barely scrape by. Like you mention, tournaments don't make the location a dime most of the time and most likely cost them money on top of it.
