league drama: playoffs and next season

You are disgusted with this season you swear you're laying off league pool, then by second/fourth week of next season you're back again.

You're going to leave this league, shop for another league hoping better handicaps and greener pastures?

I'll start. My friend F contacted me, he wants to play league again. I suggested he go back to our old 8-ball team. He thinks they're too social, laid back, and told me they replaced his spot with a hot filipina doctor. I agree, she is easier on the eyes than he is. I still keep tabs with my old team (those gandu . So, he can't go back unless someone drops out. He suggested we play Team 9-ball. In our pool-hall, we are fortunate enough to have two different leagues, one geared towards beginners/intermediates and intermediate/advanced. Not unlike APA 8-ball and Masters.

I tell F that I'm playing in Team 9-ball this season, and I was lowered to a D+ and still getting my a$$ kicked. As an example, I pointed out I recently lost 8-10 with the handicap against a low A. It's now rack your own, so for $16 I don't even get to play rack boy anymore.

In team 8-ball, we're respectably high. Against the lowest ranked player, I would have to give 3 balls per game. In team 9-ball, we both would be D, D+s. We would form the backbone of a respectable 8-ball team.

So now that I steered him back to 8-ball. He doesn't want to go back to our old team, wants to create a totally new team. I suggested N, from Wednesday night. She is looking to join another team. He likes the idea.

Last Friday, invited N to hang out with us. She brings her non-pool playing friend A. Turns out A is a much better player, and spent two years working in a poolhall. So, now F wants both girls on the team. Jokingly I tell him, having one Asian female pool player is a sign that you want your team to be taken seriously. I mockingly suggest that having both sends warning shot to all team to take wake up and take notice. He takes me serious, and this week announced recruiting a fourth asian player; a fellow pinoy.

Usually for drama I like watching korean soap operas and spanish telenovela, but playing in leagues keeps me entertain.

On a serious note, I suggest to F, he can be captain but let me take care of logistics.

R is from my old 8-ball team. He was playing with us Friday night. He was trying to woo one over to his team. I said, who are you going to kick off? He confided that the doctor is leaving for California, so now there is an opening.

I'm going to entice N to join F's new team with this piece of Magic Chalk.

Typical drama for me, if you win you are sandbagging, if you lose you are dumping games to manage your handicap. No one is ever happy.

With that said, I can fade all the drama - I'm struggling to fade the barely usable bar equipment we play on though and I wish there was an in house league or some regular tournaments close by that I could satisfy my competitive desires through...

I am on an LTC qualified 8ball and 9ball team so I'm looking forward to that, had an undefeated / MVP 9 ball session too for whatever that's worth.

To me my league is a necessary evil, and a bittersweet experience.

On Team 9-ball, one of my teammates was so disgusted with his game. He gave this to me. Now he has a Chalk Shark. Of course it's never the player, must be the faulty equipment.

Aren't we poolplayers a whiney bunch?

In all seriousness, if there are other people who feel the same way then have you thought about organizing your own league/tournament?

Well lets see....other than ....

Being called a sand bagger occasionally

Pissing some one off when I quote a rule

Pissing some one off for calling for an observer on close shots when said person ks known for not calling fouls on themselves

Sore losers

Players quitting and starting their own team when we have a kick ass team already qualified for ltc

Having team mates that play awesome during regular session then fold under pressure in. Play offs

Other than that i have a great time :grin-square:

I've been frustrated at my lack of real progress over the last few years, so I get a bit down and not motivated to play. I still do, and enjoy myself once I get there. I value my friendship with not only my team, but most of the other players in our division, it's really a family of sorts, and I would miss that terribly, more than the pool.

As team captain of one team and co-captain of another the babysitting gets old occasionally, especially with one friend on my 8-ball team. I'm thinking at some point I will likely stop being the captain and let someone else deal with it, but that's not likely in the immediate future.

I know what you mean dub about baby sitting. Most of my teams are great but not my Sunday night team.

Been having problems with people showing late...leaving early ...or not showing at all. After the last mat h of this session I read the riot act to the entire team.

Well every one got on board with me but one...he quit..by luck of the draw we qualified for 8 ball play offs. My 2 best player...besides me of course dis not show for play offs..

Every one else was early and ready to play. We won8-0 in 3 matches . Tell you about it in my next post

So you want to hear about pls off drama huh ? Thank fully we hardly ever have any but there is always an exception.

Take sun night double jeopardy. We managed to get in 8 ball but failed for 9 ball. The team we faced was playing both on tables next to each other. Why I mention this fact will be obvious in a minute.

I throw 1st and throw a 4...they counter with a 4. My guy wins 3-0. As soon as the match was over the opposing player says my guy oughta be a 5 and he was visibly upset. It went 14 innings in 3 racks with no safes...sorry but that aint 5 territory

2nd match they throw a 3 and I counter with a 3. My 3 wins 2-0 .

So we are up 6-0 . I throw a 5 the 3rd match and the captain throws himself...he is a 5. Now why they did not throw their 7 after they are down 6-0 is beyond me. Well their captain is a lil bit of a hot shot thinking he is better than he really is and i guess the were saving their 7 for me.

My guy wins the 1st rack. They win the next 2. During this match...their 4 who played the 1st match is playing 9 ball on the next table. It's obvious he is still upset about his loss and its obvious he keeps walking from the table he playing on to where his team is sitting shark in my player several times. I mean walking straight I. Front of him when he gets down on a ball or walking between my layer and our table we are playing on. After about the 5th time I say some thing to their score keeper. Sure enough their players heads toward their seating area again but their score keeper throws up his hand stopping him.this tome and later tells him not to do I again

During the 4 th rack their captain is on the 8 ball. My guys ball is partially blocking the 8. I call for am observer. Their captain gets visibly pissed. When the observer gets their the shooter takes a flier at the 8 and it goes 2 rails into the wrong pocket. He slams his cue down on the table in disgust.

He plays the rest of the mat h visibly pissed and my guy WI s the match.

We win 8-0 . How is that for drama ?

Any issues with collecting money? Teammate have been drinking and eating food all night. When it comes time to pay for their share of the green fee, wants you to cover and pay you back next week. Doesn't show up next week or two and forgets to pay you back.

Couple of weeks ago I was out of town for Super Billiards Expo. So I couldn't play league that Thursday. Around 11PM, I texted my Team Captain to find out how we're doing. Silence, so that's not good. I check the website. We had a tie breaker, and we lost. My Team Captain lost his match, and decided to put himself up for the tie breaker.

When I came back, I asked how come we didn't put up the strongest guy (R). Who was something like 8-1 as a C+. His reply, from his experience if you lose your first match, you usually win your second. FWIW, this week R was raised from a C+ to a B, so he sat out.

I have, and the shame is that there is a really nice old-school pool hall 10 mins from my house, but the owner is simply not interested in hosting any leagues or tournaments at all. It breaks my heart to know I could be playing somewhat competitively on well maintained GC1's. Such is the state of the game I suppose...
