Hey everyone, I am trying to start a league here in NY. Basically I am trying to figure out a break down as to how league fees should work, meaning prize money, entry fee, weekly fee, and then how the money should be broken down after the fact.

1. What percentage of money should go into a prize fund?

2. Should people win by team or by individual or both?

3. How much is a fair weekly fee?

Basically guys I am trying to start an independent league and am trying to look for formatting help.

Thanks so much.

Hey Charlie -

I'll just tell you what I do for my league and you can take what you wish.

We run 2 seasons a year (June - Nov, Nov - April), mainly based on the BCA Nationals in Vegas.

We run for 17-18 weeks a session. We have a Position Night half way through the season and then again the last week of play. (Position Night is 1st plays 2nd, 3rd plays 4th, etc. It gives a little more parity to your league and ability for teams to move up)

We have 5 person teams and we charge $7/player/week. So $35/team.

With 8 teams that is $280/week, $4760/year.

We pay out $100 to the following individual awards. Most Wins, Most Table Runs and Highest Win % (We do win % because everyone doesn't play an equal amount of games, we do a race to 13 each week). We pay out 2nd and 3rd highest win % as well ($75 and $50).

For the final payouts we make sure that every team gets money back.

Estimated payout:
1st $1,200
2nd $1,000
3rd $850
4th $600
5th $400
6th $250
7th $175
8th $125
$4,600

And I take a small fee for running everything (I do not work for the bar). Our league is an in-house league. For my own charges, I work out a deal for free table time, occasional food/beverage and a small advertising fee (I run a website).

The league offers a Free Team Drink (1 drink for each player of what they are already drinking), Shirts for Nationals, Team Entry fee into Vegas ($250), Year-end Banquet/Awards. Discounted Table time.

Charlie,

I use the house leagues at Amsterdam Billiards in New York City as my standard when comparing other leagues. The owner Greg Hunt would probably make a good side business advising other poolhalls how to run a successful business. Contact Danny Barouty and Chris Lynch, they're on AZB, along with other staff members lurking. FWIW, even owners of other poolhalls come to compete in the leagues at Amsterdam.

Its a new independent house league based in Queens. Tell Vincent that you heard it from me.

1. As much as you can bear? I know an in-house league that's 100% payback and money added to boot. If you're not trying to make a living on this and just want people to get into pool... keep a little money each week for the mountain of hassle you'll have to go through and pay out the rest. Estimate how many hours per week you'll need to devote to paperwork and calls and complaints and pay yourself, say, 10 or 15 bucks an hour.

2. By team, with the unspoken rule being they split it evenly amongst themselves. I've seen teams make manual adjustments (the guy who didn't show up for half the sessions got a little less... the captain/coach got a little more... etc)

3. Under ten bucks I think.
